I mean, it's it's it's a taunting that that you might get you know from from a you know Four-year-old or a five-year-old when someone says well if you're really so smart tell me this If you're really not afraid that if you're really the Son of God you want to go devil needs to grow up It it's it's it's sort of taunting and where we wouldn't think that that's going to Affect Jesus the story is told because we will all fall for that sort of stuff all the time We we tend to use these types of techniques to talk ourselves out of being Christian and And I think I mentioned this on on Cash Wednesday that it would be the healthiest Lent we could have if We could look around the world and see the people who are in need See the people who are suffering see the people who are in you know in the most turmoil and for Lent Give up our excuses You know not our chocolate Not our chocolate not a dessert here that what happens when we give up our excuses When we get well, they shouldn't have gotten in trouble in the first place well I'm not going to give them money. They'll just spend it on drink not that I know that but it's a great excuse A lot and and what it is is I'm going to not respond to people and show you why I'm Christian to do it You know if if you're really Christian you would know that those people are beneath you. No, that's not really Christian and When he doesn't realize is when he says if you're the Son of God You'll do this and Jesus answers in many different ways, but his answer is always the same Actually if you're the Son of God you have no need to do that You know I think we always think that boy If the more power someone has in our world this all you know the more power people get the crazier they become I Need they just go great they love power And you know they always say Oh power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely not true power corrupts Absolute power does not see what we see in humans is power coupled with enormous amounts of insecurity That's when power corrupts God if we really believe absolute power corrupts, then God would be absolutely corrupt And we don't believe that why do you God is not insecure? God is not you know. It's it's when I have power, and I'm always afraid that The bigger bully is going to show up tomorrow I'm protecting myself against. I don't know go absolute power doesn't protect itself doesn't need to Absolute power knows what's going to happen in 500 years after you and I have already passed from this life under into the next one Absolute power can't panic I Always think that that's that's my vision sometimes when I and I and I will I will confess I like many people keep saying About everything that I can think of sometimes my own life other people's lives global politics I want to say how long Oh Lord how long? When is God gonna step in and fix the world the way Patrick Dolan thinks he should? Amazing he hasn't tapped into this yet. Oh You know there's that but there's that idea That why is it God because God? God can do everything but enter into our panic And that's that's hard for us It's hard for me to know that I could be going through something in the next year. That's going to be horrifically damaging And I might not survive But if we're believing in eternity After I pass away Healing can still happen and God sees where I'm going to be in a thousand years And if you see where someone's going to be in a thousand years you do become like the parent who has a Nine nine month to a year old taking their first steps, and they fall and they scrape their need badly There is red juice coming out Now Anyone who's seen a child go through that knows from the child's perspective the world has just ended And Even if you're compassionate you're not panicked over a scraped knee and God love you if the child gets a sense that you're not taking it seriously And You can take it seriously, but you cannot enter into the level of the panic that the child has you just can't Because you know that by Wednesday. They'll have forgotten it Probably because they bump their head on the table, but they'll have forgot They're on to the next adventure. I Think we forget that God sees our future adventures So we want God to panic instead of Being invited into the solution instead of I think sometimes we think our job as Christians is to pray until God takes care of things Instead of our job is to pray until we figure out how to take care of things The opening prayer For Ash Wednesday the opening prayer for the season of Lent Has a little surprise in it that I think we never notice Because if I ask the average Catholic to describe, you know It's different during Lent well be fast We give up things and we pray more when I go to more church when I go to Stations of the Cross By the way Stations of the Cross Fridays 615 I think the wires doing it this week so but but It's it's this sense that what do we do for Lent we pray more and we and we fast we sometimes forget the almsgiving and What's interesting about that opening prayer is it reprioritizes everything the point of Lent is the charity It what the prayer says is today as we begin this campaign Not a prayer not a fasting as we begin this campaign of Christian service May we be armed with the tools of self-restraint and prayer But those are just the tools those are not the ends those are the means they are to move us into Christian service What happens when I give up whatever excuse I used to look the other way with someone else three-corner What happens when I give up an excuse for Lent? That's why I'm not helping or why I'm I decided I decided my job is to pray and God's job is to help Because you know, that's what Jesus said Jesus said remember go out and tell God to feed the boar It's our job all of the prayer and the fasting is to move us to be a people who will go out in this campaign of Christian service service to the world not just to other Christians But it's service to the world and and you know Certainly, we know that prayer can put us in the right mindset. So can fasting. I Kind of constructed a prayer that I kept for several weeks now a couple of weeks ago Several weeks now about people who are homeless and displaced and all about people who are going through things you and I cannot Imagine and they cannot escape This is this is the only thing fasting should really do for us is to create Just enough suffering for us to go You know, there's a lot of people in the world that have no choice but to live with this all the time I do it by choice, you know, you talk about privilege Privilege is when we fast. Oh, that's an interesting spiritual exercise While others did that way every day because they have no choice That's that's a different life And and so let calls us into the experience of the poor so that we're less likely to say no Into the experience of people who don't have freedom so that we will not say no to their suffering every group that suffers Lent calls us to kind of put on those shoes and walk that mile until we're a little less able to look the other way What are the tools we have that allow us to look the other way and still feel righteous You're one of the Christian excuses we can use to say well, I'm not gonna help those people They're not Christian Or they're Christian, but they're not Catholic or they're Christian and they're Catholic, but they don't pray the right way They don't kneel at rhyme on You know, he say they didn't make this ritual. We can always cut down the group to who we for slot Jesus says what happens when we start giving up the excuses And and men what Jesus says today is yes through each one of these each one of these is a great excuse You know Feed yourself. Don't worry about everyone else Have power over others don't worry about anything else You know worship the center of human power rather than divine power And you can always tell the difference We should want power in the world God's power not ours and the difference is always and I always love to just put it this Way power over any money is human. Even God has no power over us He could he just doesn't choose power over if God had with God chose power over you there would be no sin There would be no free will he would just control you Yeah God has God chooses power under power under can only lift That's the power we're supposed to exercise if you want to feel powerful in the world lift someone up Humanity too often feels powerful when they're pushing others down I'm gonna teach those people a lesson That's not the power of God. It has nothing to do with God We're going to lift people up. That's the power and we have to figure out this lead what stops us from Exercising that power when we can And I look at all those sag lunches back there, and I think you know it's amazing We actually have the cure for hunger As soon as we care enough to give out the message And so God says today, what's what's your obstacle? What's in your way? What's your excuse?
