A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to the Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, be watchful, be alert. You do not know when the time will come. It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his own work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on watch. Watch, therefore. You do not know when the Lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cock's crow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all. Watch. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Amid the peaceful pictures that we often have of winter, I sometimes think that, and maybe in the past year especially, but I sometimes think that the first Sunday of Advent should be the closest we get to a really, really angry Sunday in the church. We hear all these, be watchful, be vigilant. What it's saying is, wake the heck up, folks. Wake up. You look at things that happen all around us. I remember in Charlottesville when they had all the white supremacists marching and people went, oh my, there's still prejudice in this country. Wake up. Yes. Yes, we've been willingly asleep forever. No matter what it is, no matter what the next thing is, people right after the elections last year, oh, this is the first time, there are family members, we can't talk to each other. Family members you haven't agreed with on anything in years. Wake up. We don't want to, how bad does it get before we go, maybe we have to change something. Because normally when we say, wake up, we're talking to someone else. We don't say it to ourselves nearly often enough. How often we look around and we go, oh, that's really getting bad. And we know, we know it's been going on for a while and we kind of, I used to always joke, and I still say it, it's just becoming less of a joke when I say, you know, I can't get through breakfast without three good delusions. Wake up. That means to finally look around and go, you know, it's not that the world has become a bad place, it's that we've made it that place. We're part of it. And most of us, when we look around and see things we don't like, we kind of cast ourselves as the victims who don't know what to do. The world's going that direction, what will we do? The church just said this, what will I do? Who do you think the church is? Who do you think the country is? They're going to so wonder if they listen to that on the podcast later what was going on. We are. We are. And we are so comfortable going along with everything until it finally gets so bad and then we are like, who could have seen this coming? Anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear. The question is, what is that dynamic that makes us not see, that purposely puts blinders on us so we can't see when things are going off the rails? This happens in our own life. It's why we do need people we can trust that can pull us off of the path that we've decided we know our own path. And God puts us in community to be informed by others. You know, in my singing life, there's about 10 times I can look back and see an immediate overnight change in the way I sang and it was always because I was working with a teacher. Someone I trusted first off and then someone who could break through the, I mean it's amazing with the thickness of my skull that there's any resonance at all when I sing. And one of the times, Laurel Miller, who was a voice teacher in college, and Laurel was really my first spiritual director. She never said it out loud, but she was. And I always suspected that the other teachers on faculty found her, in musical terms, kooky. She had wild gray hair that came down to about here and she looked like something out of Macbeth. And when other teachers would get up to do their recital and do Mozart, she'd say, I just found these dialogues on Frankenstein by an unknown Ukrainian composer. Wait till you hear them. And they're like. She was just crazy. I knew immediately that's who I have to study with. I have one chance of looking sane and it's right next to her. But she was brilliant. We would often be doing something in a lesson and I just wasn't getting it. And she would say to me, you know, you can't hear this right now. You're just at a place in your life. You are not going to hear what I'm saying today. Let's move on and not get in a stitch over it. Such a confident teacher. She wasn't going to get, I've got to get them. I've got to get them where I'm trying to get them. She knew I wasn't going to get there that day. And sometimes five years later, something she'd say would come back and I'd go, oh, that thing I just did, that's that thing that Laurel was talking about that I didn't understand at the time. Couldn't get there at the time. But one time, she always used to tape lessons. And when I say tape lessons for, since we have all the youth here for RE today, it was called a cassette tape. It died out shortly after the dinosaurs. But she would always tape your lesson. And we're going through this lesson and she's got me doing this one thing and I'm finally, I just do exactly what she says. And it just, I didn't like the sound. It sounded kind of too affected. It's not the sound I wanted to make. But I thought, okay, I'm just going to do it. I'm going to trust her and I'm going to do it. And so I sang this piece from the Messiah the way she wanted me to. And then she said to me, because she could just read my face, she said, so why is it you don't like that? And I said, it's just, I don't think it's me. It doesn't sound like me. It doesn't sound like I want my voice to sound like. And she gave me one of her great speeches of, well, you know, if God gave you a trumpet, you can want to play trombone all you want. All you'll do is, you know, smack the trumpet out of shape and have nothing. But she said, well, that's all right. I just want you to listen. And so she rewinds the tape and she says, you know, and I've sung it twice. I've sang it the way that I know I want it to sound. And then I sing it her way. And I listened to it on tape. And her way is what I think my way sounded like. Because see, we hear our voice through our eustachian tubes. That's why when any of you first hear your voice on tape and you go, oh, I can't stand the way my voice sounds on tape. I hate the way it sounds on the answering machine. That's not the way it sounds on the answering machine. That's the way it sounds. It sounds different to you because it's echoing through your tissue and all this stuff. You know, people always say they sound really great in the bathroom. You basically hear through a bathroom of tissue here. Or bathroom tissue. I hadn't thought of that before. Okay, anyway. So you've got this sort of, all of a sudden there's a voice outside of myself who I trust. And then the minute I hear that tape, I like never, ever go back to the other way of singing. It's an overnight change. Those come rarely. But they come because we have people in our lives that can finally shake us and say, wake up, wake the heck up, what are you doing? Most of us, you know, I struggle in my life, and I've told staff and everyone, I struggle with procrastination. I'm very good at punctuality. And what that meant in school is if I had a book report due at noon on Thursday, it was done at noon on Thursday. If they said to me, here, return this book sometime, a year later this book will still be right here. I work better with deadlines. And most of us in our spirituality do that. We can't, as time management people would tell you, we really can't get important and urgent put in the right places in our mind. We are people that run from urgency to urgency. And if there's a deadline, we get it done. And important things like family. You know, I've got my job. You know, when I've got time left, I sure hope I have time left for my family. And then someone says, well, what's the most important thing to you in your life? Oh, family. No, it's not. My urgent things are the most important. And once I get past urgent, they're top of the secondary list. It's so hard for us to focus on what's important. Because, you know, in our life of bells and whistles, you know, if it's not, if my cell phone is not going to tell me what things do in an hour, it's not real. If our technology doesn't make us check in on something, we don't check in at all. There really is, I mean, a couple people have tried, but they're just awful. But there is no God app yet. When do I pray? I don't know. I'm waiting for my cell phone to tell me. You know, when do we build a relationship with God? When do we build relationships with each other? When do we give one another real opportunities, the people we trust, to weigh in on what we're doing? When do we really open that dialogue? What Advent tells us is, when you're putting it off, you're actually deciding never to do it. What we put off is really a decision just not to do something. And we know that. I mean, no one says it out loud, but when you say, you know, I'm going to wait to diet after the holidays, what we're saying is, before I lose weight, I'd like to gain seven more pounds. So I can really get a running start, you know. Before I start being nicer to people, I'm going to continue being mean and dig that in just a while longer. Every habit we're not breaking today is a habit we're reinforcing. Those are our choices. If you're not breaking it, you're reinforcing it. No one has a habit that you're just not going to touch on for a few weeks. So when we get these Advent readings that say, wake up! Wake up! It's because we're allowing ourselves to dig ingrained patterns in our lives that we really, deep down, have no intention of changing. We don't do this out of some sort of crazy mythological fear that what if Jesus comes back Tuesday in the middle of the night and we're not ready? That's not the fear. The fear is, you and I know, if we're not concerned about being ready by Tuesday night, we probably aren't concerned about being ready at all. And it won't matter if it doesn't happen until the end of our lives. We've made the decision to put it on the back burner. Has anyone gotten to the back burner yet? Has anyone ever actually gotten to the back burner? You know, my stove must have 20 rows of burners. And so we kind of look at this moment and say, when do we wake up? When do we look around and say, okay, you're right, we are, as a country, still incredibly prejudiced. When I grew up here, so I am as well, what am I going to do to change that? I can't tell you how many people I know that are dead set against prejudice, especially racial, dead set against racial prejudice. And if you ask them how many friends in their inner circle are not the same race as they are, they'll tell you none. All of my friends look just like me, but what are we going to do about racism? And when we say we, of course, we mean the people on the East Coast. You know. But we look at our own and we go, huh, I do it. I don't seem to have a big cross section of friends. I won't even let people from the other political party in my door. But why will they not let me in? What's wrong? You know, wake up. Every year we get this, wake up. Lent is going to tell us to start giving up things. Advent says wake up and start doing things. Be open to the God that's going to reveal himself today. It's not that, it's not that the world's going to end today, but Sunday will end today. And a whole Sunday of opportunities with it. Many of them will be opportunities we won't see again. Every day has an end to that day.
