It has occurred to me over the last couple of weeks as I've been thinking a little bit about today that thanksgiving and the act of gratitude is really a function of memory. It's taking a moment to remember what has happened. And sometimes it is the need to correct our selective memory, we remember certain things. Most of us have some really old fundamental memories of things that went wrong. Wounds are slow to heal because we remember them so well. And so we don't always remember everything that is going right in life. And the enemy of gratitude, the enemy of thanksgiving is not so much a mean-spiritedness, it's not so much a closed-mindedness. Especially in modern day, the enemy of gratitude is entitlement. Entitlement is everything is supposed to go well. And if everything really goes well, if we're entitled, then what should be gratitude simply becomes satisfaction. You know, it did okay. When I was, oh, probably before the age of fifth grade, you know, the grading system, they wouldn't give you A's and B's and C's that low. You just got satisfactory or unsatisfactory. And you know, satisfactory was just never that satisfying. There was no excellent or anything. It was just, you know, if you did so good, you were satisfactory. I mean, you can imagine at your wedding, having your spouse look across and say to you, you are satisfactory. Oh, happy day. Satisfactory is the highest grade the entitled can give. That's our ceiling if we're entitled. So when we think, well, I'm entitled to good roads, then the roads are satisfactory or not. We don't even notice the roads until there's a pothole. And then we're incensed that they aren't satisfactory. We can only be pulled down when we live with that kind of entitlement. And so to change our memory, to learn to focus on different things, to, you know, get together today with family and friends, and you know, and I really have to remind myself, I am not entitled to a family that agrees with me on everything. I don't even know where I would have thought that. It's never happened. You know, how many of us kind of say, oh, you know, the holidays are coming and there's all this family drama, because, you know, I'm entitled to a family that, you know, behaves the way I think it should. And of course, all the stress is happening because everyone thinks that everyone should think the way they think, rather than, you know, you have two choices, alone or with others. And there's nothing quite so disconcerting as the day that you realize all those others are actually other. They are not you. They are not reflections of you in the world. They are other people. And if we're entitled, you know, I am entitled to my opinion. We all say that, and you are. But what we really mean by that is I'm entitled for you to agree with my opinion. And many of you today will remember that you're not entitled to that at all. You will be reminded by the end of the day. So what happens when we become entitled to certain things? People around us notice immediately. We become a little more demanding. We're much more aware of, you know, you are not living up to my expectations. We get a little complainy, whiny, you know. We have a whole set of things. We have a set of ideas that someone is not living up to. And it's kind of the death of Thanksgiving. And we're told today, be on your guard, very careful not to forget the things your eyes have seen and your ears have heard the gifts of God. What does it mean to be very aware? Yesterday I had, and this happens probably more often than I'd like, but not certainly nowhere near 50% of the time. It's a minuscule part of my life. I woke up yesterday. Luckily, I didn't have any morning appointments. I woke up with a migraine that would not go away. And, you know, I'm never aware of what it is to be healthy until I have an unhealthy day. You know, all of a sudden, because good health, that's an entitlement in my mind. And I don't mean it in a mean way. It's just that something happens often enough, you come to expect it. And, you know, it's always like, I wake up this morning and I'm like, okay, no headache. I can look into the light. Oh, it's going to be a good day. But unless I have a day like yesterday, today goes unnoticed. How much is going right goes unnoticed until something really goes wrong. And so, you know, this is a feast where we come together and hopefully we re-remember our year. We go back and we re-filter it. We filter and we look at what has happened that is good. We look at what has happened that is positive. We look at, you know, someone said to me the other day, oh, there's so much going on in the country. And, you know, my friends and I are talking about this and we're doing all this stuff and yadda yadda. And we're just horrified, we're horrified, we're horrified. And finally she started to realize, you know, my friends and I would have done nothing this year were it not for a little something to stir us up. You know, some people are closer to their friends because they're out doing something with them in the world. They're remembering that they actually have missions in the world and we're not called to be too complacent with the status quo. Oh, there's something good that came out of it. When we re-remember our year with a different filter, because most of us, our filter is a little too radically set towards remembering what we're angry about. We become what is called injustice collectors. Sadly, that's one of the categories of a serial killer. That's what they call an injustice collector. Someone who's just so mad about things that have happened in their life and they finally boil over. And I think too many of us become that way. We collect the things people have done to us that are wrong. And because we start to become a people who feel we're entitled to something better, no matter what someone does, it's still not quite enough. Or they could have done a little better. Or there's just an extra layer of critique. And we sort of become thankless people. We're always wanting a little more gratitude and offering a little less. And so today we come together and, you know, I really, really hope that we all have gatherings today that are at least a little difficult. Something where you can look around and know that, you know, life isn't—I am not entitled to smooth sailing, but there's a lot here to be thankful for. If I really, really, really didn't want to be there, I wouldn't be. Well, you know, there's obligations. Meaning, I don't want to lose these connections. If you don't want to be connected, there's no obligation. And we don't recognize, well, of course we want to be connected. But we would like to be connected on our terms. And that we're not entitled to. We have to find something together, you know. Well, they just—I never feel like I can voice my own opinion. Voice it. You know, there's all these podcasts out there literally telling people how to try to discuss politics with family today. Trying to give them, like, tools to get through, you know, because as we know, we are a country of centrists. Those centered at zero and those centered at a hundred, you know, and nothing in between. How do we discuss? And I said this a few years back, but what I have found, and I will admit that not only is this a good technique I learned years ago, I do like that it drives my family up a tree a bit. And that is when they say things I don't, I don't take the opposite. I don't put out the argument. I don't think I'm going to change their mind. I just say, oh, I disagree. No, you've got to understand. Yeah, I disagree. No, I disagree. Drives them crazy. Just to disagree and to let people know, you know, we're not entitled to see things the same way. We're not entitled. We're entitled if we want to be connected and they want to be connected, we get to see each other. We get to be connected. But we have to be connected to who they are, not to who we hope they are. And Thanksgiving is this great moment where we look back and we go, you know, there's just tons to be thankful for. I can't tell you how many people resent that their parents, you know, fed and clothed them for 20 years, but didn't give me all the emotional support that I really think I wanted. You know, and therefore I can't even see what they did provide. That outfit they bought you, I didn't like it. You know, I don't like where they spent their money for me. It's very easy to get caught up in the what could have gone better. But in the end, we have to look back and say, what are we thankful for? It becomes a different approach to the world. And I think every time, it would be an interesting exercise between now and Christmas. If nothing else, it would give something to distract you from Christmas. But if every time you really found yourself upset about something, like if every time you were upset about the pothole, you took a moment to wonder who built the road. Every time we're upset, I always think, you know, people will say, you know, teenagers are so ungrateful. And I'm thinking, yeah, and we get worse as time goes on. I remember as a teenager, if my parents, if we went out to dinner, that was kind of a big event. You know, it took 30 years later to go out to dinner and think, they got my order wrong. You know, this place really doesn't do fish very well. I mean, think, most of us have gotten a lot pickier about things. Back then, it was an event. Now, they're not up to my entitlement standards. It's so hard to find a good restaurant in Denver. There's only thousands of them. You know, we get maybe less and less grateful because we tell ourselves, you know, I'm becoming, I've said this before, but becoming more sophisticated. Sophistication, like entitlement, is the other enemy of gratitude. I shouldn't throw them under the bus so often, but I have friends from years ago who love theater, but they always love— and John Kite and I always roll our eyes when they'll say, well, now we saw this show. Now, you understand, we're a tough room. We know theater inside and out. We are a tough room. And so there were some real problems. They are so sophisticated, I don't think they've enjoyed an evening of theater in years. They don't spot one thing that couldn't have gone a little bit better. And I always think, what do you get out of that? I mean, you get to go home feeling sophisticated, but I'm thinking, have you enjoyed an evening of theater in 20 years? And I think most of us, well, my palate is a little better now. So, you know, mom's stuffing used to be just fine. I find it a little, I don't know, dull these days. You know, tell your mom that. That will start things off nicely. It's so easy to be entitled, and then we lose something. We lose health. We lose a friend. We lose a relationship. And at that moment, you know, we're so caught up in the loss that we forget that a week ago, we weren't even that thrilled with it. Rather than taking the time to go, we should be thrilled with a little more. We should be excited about what goes on in our midst that goes right. That we, you know, start to filter our world a little differently. It's always, and I've gone here before in sermons, it's just, it's one of the fascinating parts of physiological psychology to know how very, very little of your life you remember at any given moment. You know, most of you, if you've had breakfast, probably remember what you had for breakfast. But I could already ask you how many bites it was, and you wouldn't know. Within a week, you probably won't be able to pull this breakfast out from the others. And if I asked you what you had a few months ago, you know, I mean nothing, anyone who watches those like Law & Order TV shows knows there's nothing dumber than when the officer goes up and says, where were you two Wednesdays ago at seven o'clock? And they go, oh, well, you know, I was at this movie. And, you know, all of us would be like, let me check my calendar. I don't have a clue where I was two Wednesdays ago at seven o'clock. So, since so much of our personality is based on those events that have shaped us over the years, what if you remembered a different slice of your life than the one you do? What if you focused on different memories and let those be the ones that form you? What if you had to go to therapy for all the good things that have happened? I keep telling people, I'm waiting just to hear from one child, you know, that they had a real horrible day, but one really good thing happened that they can't get past. What if we focused on the things that give us gratitude? That's all that Zachariah does today is to focus on, remember how much God has done for us. You know, forget not God's mercies. And I think we have to look to our lives and say, how much is going right? How much is going correctly? And how little of that would I actually be entitled to? Would I actually be entitled to? You know, entitlement is a strange idea. And what we realize as Christians is, I'm not entitled to be alive at any moment. It's the grace of God. We ever get our heads wrapped around that, then Thanksgiving stops being a daily event annually, one day a year. All of a sudden, Thanksgiving turns into Eucharist.
