Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you until the end of an age. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The Feast of the Ascension, of course, belongs properly to this past Thursday. It's what we call the word is transmuted to Sunday in, well, in some of the United States, which kind of disclaims the word united. But in some of the states, at least with the church, it happened on Thursday because, and the reason, none of these dates are actual anniversaries of anything because we don't know the actual times they happen. But once you plug in one holiday, then you can do the others. So for us each year, Easter is kind of our North Star. And once we get Easter figured out, that Thursday is, you know, Pentecost is 50 days later. And this is done 10 days before, which would have landed it on Thursday. Some of the states have just said, yeah, but no one will come on Thursday. And people go, what an awful reason to change it. And actually, it's called a pastoral reason. So you can say, well, we're going to fight that and fight that and fight that until those people stop working on Thursdays. And in the meantime, an entire generation will never hear the Ascension readings. No, we know that none of these are actual anniversary dates. We had a tour guide when my last two that I did, but the last two that the parish did as well, of pilgrimages to the Holy Land. We had this amazing tour guide, Julie. And she used to always say, now you understand when we come here to the Church of the Resurrection or we come here to the church where they have the scourging of the pillar, these are not a sort of X marks the spot. You know, these are the places that have been traditionally associated with this. No one in the Gospels really had much interest in giving us geographic locations. That wasn't, in their mind, germane to the story. It wouldn't have mattered if it happened on the other side of town. But these are the places that become our tradition. And so Ascension for us is more than just the event, it is the tradition. Edward Skielbeck, one of the theologians out of Holland, it's very difficult to read because I don't know who translates from Dutch to English, but it's pretty stilted by the time you get it. But he used to always talk about the Ascension as a continuation in the body of Christ. The Ascension of Jesus will never be complete until every last member of the body has ascended. And where we think that's an interesting Ascension theology, it's really his theology of what it means to be a member of the body of Christ. That Jesus himself is not fully ascended until every one of us is. And it puts a responsibility on us to lift the other up. How different would faith look if we actually focused on lifting people up? And I'm not accusing our faith over any other. I mean, throughout, as a matter of fact, it's many of the grassroots level Christian churches in America that have become so harsh, and the fire and brimstone, that people literally go to church to be beat down, to be told what they're doing wrong. And we get that emotionally confused with a sense of holiness. I know I'm holy when I hate myself. It is not that uncommon. Because when I hate myself, I'm really in touch with how sinful I am. Somehow, joy and delight and what Jesus talks about, I come to bring you joy and bring you it fully. I've watched as some strains of Christianity will say, well, when they say joy, they mean a quiet joy. That's always my, we used to get that in my first seminary. And let me tell you, I'll talk a little trash about it, but it was the most wonderful seminary in the world. And all my formation happened there. In Rome, I got lots of academics, but these Benedictines in Missouri, they were the best. But their liturgy was very, very Middle Ages. And on Easter, every year, I just would wait for it. And I know it's not supposed to be the holy response, but I'd kind of giggle every year. The Alleluia, they were, and they loved this. It's this Alleluia that we resurrected from the eighth century, and it's got such history to it. And all of a sudden, as sun was rising, because you know, the liturgy started at 4 a.m. with all the readings, the vigil, and you'd hear, ♪ Allelu, oo, oo, oo, oo, oo, oo, oo, oo, oo, oo, oo, oo ♪ and about five minutes later, ♪ Yah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah ♪ And I always used to get this picture of Peter and John and Mary coming out of the tomb going, he is risen. And it was, and I have no doubt that for me, this was a cultural shift. That sort of chant, it probably was never done that slow before music historians got a hold of it and told you the right way to do it. Because when you ever read books on chant and how chant should actually be done, chant is supposed to be just a hair under the tempo of spoken language. So even though you've probably never done it when you're at a parish that chants the Our Father, it should sound, ♪ Our Father who art in heaven, our Lord be thy name ♪ And I'll go, ♪ Our Father ♪ And you're like, oh, that elucidates the text. Chant done badly takes all the inflection out. And the idea of chant was to musically notate the natural rise and fall of a spoken text. So you kind of have to do it. But I always thought there's been a shift where someone has said, well, if we can rewrite joy until it looks like solemnity, that will be holy joy. And it doesn't mean that, you know, to be Christian, we walk around just hysterical all the time. But that we live life more fully. It's kind of an interesting piece of Ignatian spirituality. You know, Ignatian spirituality, as spirituality goes, not liturgy, anything else, as spirituality goes, it's probably the most comprehensive makeover that any religious order does. I mean, as far as, you know, if you're going into the Jesuits and you start into those Ignatian retreats, it is there to really restructure your spirituality. And anyone who doesn't know about it would say, well, that's a group that they're, you know, the more you can restructure and get them to go through the program, you know, there's gonna be a real sense of, we all have the same spirituality. And they all come out more radically different from one another than any other order. You know, and because what Ignatian spirituality does is it says, by the time you are done with this, your highs will be higher, your lows will be lower, who you are will be more evident in the world. It's going to be how we bring you to the surface, not how we put braces on your brains and get you all to look alike, but how we bring you to the surface. And so this very rigorous spiritual training actually creates wild individuals. Well, I shouldn't say wild because they come here very often and they'll get mad. But what I find is that many people think the holier we all are, the more alike we'll look. You know, people will just start walking through King Soopers with their hands, thumbs together, baby crossed here. You know, that holiness is about how much we can structure one another to look alike, as though, you know, there is one perfect image of humanity and we're all supposed to be the same. And the fascinating thing is when you look at the Jesus as the perfect image of humanity, he never preached that therefore we were all supposed to be him. There was one of those little, I can't remember what network does those little moment things where they say now that you know or something and they're little community service messages. And one of them, it was my favorite line, they were talking about people needing to be themselves and it said, be yourself, everyone else is taken. Everyone else is taken. And it doesn't mean that we can't respect our faith and we can't know where boundaries are and know where we're not going. As a matter of fact, when you know who you are, you know where your boundaries are a lot better. If we're fishing through the world trying to appear like other people, you will never understand where their boundaries come from. You can with yours. And so if our faith becomes something that lifts people up, then they will come here and be themselves. Or we will get more and more and more history of people saying, oh, you know, I'll have nothing to do with church. They don't like my friends, they don't like this, they don't like that, they beat up those people. This person's family will not talk to them because they're so religious. How many people stop talking to other people based on their religion? It was so funny this last year, people said, you know, this last year was so contentious with politics. People will always say, well, you know, I just can't believe that this is the first time in my life, there are family members that we just don't talk to each other since the election. And I always have one of two reactions, which is, well, religion's been doing that to family for years. And it really has. But the other thing is, if you aren't talking to a family member because of politics this year, there was more going on to begin with. I don't have a single, personal, close, fulfilling friendship that got trashed by politics. A lot of the people who have irritated me forever irritated me more. And it turns out, this is the shocking part, I irritate them more. And I do think when someone says, oh, this broke up the whole family. Yeah, we're not talking about a family that was there to begin with. We're talking about a family that was waiting for an issue so I didn't have to go to Thanksgiving. And so, if we become, if faith says, you know, we can't control politics. But what if faith becomes the place where this is who I am, you and I disagree, but ascension says we lift each other up. I've loved this image over the years, I've thrown it out several times, and that is, the world, politics, economics, all of that is, it is the managing of power over one another. Who has the power? Who gets to tell who what to do? You know, every relationship, when someone says, if you're gonna go into a relationship, you're gonna open yourself to being vulnerable, of what? Well, the other will have power over you, they can hurt you. We, as Christians, need to understand that every human interaction has power going on. But we don't have to use the same preposition. We can believe in God's power. I believe, truly, I believe God has power over nothing. Not because he couldn't, but because, clearly, through salvation history, he has shown us, again and again, that that is not God's way. God has power under everything. As physics will tell you, power under lifts, power over pushes down. We need to be people of power under. We need to be the people who say, we do have power with one another. I know that I can say something and hurt someone. That would be a power over, why do it? When you can, instead, say something and lift someone up, power under. Jesus comes to do nothing but show how God is willing to go to the lowest point of humanity, that passion and death, as low to lift people up. And in honor of that, too often, people of some faith run around knocking everyone down to honor Jesus lifting them up. That can't be our way. We are a people of power under. We are a people who lift one another up. We are a people who not just acknowledge the ascension, but work to be part of it. We've got 10 days until Pentecost. How many people can we lift up? How much of the kingdom of God can we reveal?
