A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, peace be with you. But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. And he said to them, why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones. As you can see, I have. And as he said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, have you anything here to eat? They gave him a piece of baked fish and took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, these are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. And he said to them, thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sin would be preached in his name to all the nations beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. I'm not sure whether the church did it on purpose or not. But you know, it kind of gives us two lines of the end of another story before it jumps into where we are today. The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way. This is the end of the kind of somewhat well-known, the road to Emmaus story. And for those who remember the story, they're walking along with Jesus and they don't recognize that it's Jesus. And even though he does everything but show them his name tag, he, you know, he explains the Old Testament, he goes through all the teachings, he does everything. And then it says he's made known in the breaking of the bread. And they finally figure it out and they kind of beat themselves up a little over, oh, how could we have not recognized? How didn't we recognize him in this? And it says, and that's over. And the next moment he appears again and they go, who's this? And they're terrified. So knowing that that story just came before it, you keep going, so what are these resurrection narratives about? It almost sounds like anyone who's done any writing of any kind of literature knows that sometimes if you've got a character and you want them to have, they finally are going to have this self-revelation. One of the hardest things for people to do is not have them make the revelation early and then you have to have the character go through the same revelation about four times. And that's when a good editor comes in and says, let's take out the first five times. So at first, that's what it sounds like. It sounds like they keep having these disciples, they don't know it's Jesus, now we know. And then we back up, we don't know it's Jesus, now we know. And you think, why are we having this same story over and over again? And it's not, it's not because they needed an editor. It's because the point that all of the resurrection narratives try to make is, Jesus is not recognizable now. In the resurrection, we think we recognize it, but it's always gonna get lost in mystery. And what these readings do is hopefully they put a limitation on the possible arrogance of religion. Some would say they've failed over the years, because religion can get pretty arrogant. I always feel that the hackles on the back of my neck, I don't know what hackles are, but someone told me they're back there, that they stand up when I hear someone say, well, I'll tell you what God thinks about this. I'm like, oh, will you now? Can't wait to hear. You'd be amazed how often a phrase like that slips out of people's mouths. Will you know what God thinks about that? No, and neither do you. This idea that we've kind of domesticated God into someone we can answer for and tell you what he thinks and why he doesn't like you and what he's up with that, it's this domestication of God that always serves the same purpose, which is, if I've domesticated God, who's really in control, me or God? Now, I know that that analogy is weak because some of you who have animals who are supposedly domesticated but are still in charge. But actually, our attempt to control God is exactly that, and it's our attempt to control everyone else. And so you'll hear those phrases often come out of people's mouths, and I think, what were they taught? We can talk about what we think the author of the gospel is trying to teach us. We can talk about all those things, but to think that I've read the gospels, I know the mind of God. God is not subject to Scripture. That is really hard. There are, like, if you go into places they call four-square gospel churches, do not tell them that God is not subject to Scripture. Some of them will have coronaries. I mean, Scripture, it's all about Scripture. No, it's all about God. And Scripture is one of the great helps that we have to get us there. But it's about God in the end, and we're told you can never quite get your mind around God. And it's fascinating. I think I say this more often than any phrase preaching, but God is infinite. Our minds are finite. You cannot shove the infinite into the finite. It doesn't work that way. And so in Catholic faith, we call this a mystery. And now I know many of you will, you know, mysteries for us are things to be solved. In theology, a mystery is not something to be solved. A mystery is something you will never solve. A mystery is beyond our comprehension. And I think it's part of the arrogance of religion that we have that, well, nothing could possibly be beyond my comprehension. What could possibly be beyond my comprehension? And my answer is always, a lot of things less complicated than God, trust me. All sorts of things beyond our comprehension. And so when we're talking about God with one another, we should never come in with the arrogance that we've got it figured out. Even when we take things down to something like the Eucharist. Do you believe it's the real body and blood of Christ? And every Catholic would probably say yes. Explain to me what that means, and they'll get a little fuzzy. When someone says, do you believe that Jesus is in the bread? Yes. Do you believe that he's in the room? Yes. Can you tell me the difference? You know, an interesting thing happened this morning. They'll change the topic so quick. It's a mystery. It is a mystery, and it's things we don't understand. And if we approach it, that faith doesn't mean we understand and then we believe. It's that we believe, and so what is it we can believe in? We can believe in what we're called to do. We can believe in the principles we're called to uphold and the way we behave with one another. But we're not called to say we figured out God. They almost had it in Scripture, and then Gregory of Nyssa got the Trinity into place for us in 800, and after that we understood God. No. Just the next image. It's just the next image. And God is always beyond our comprehension. And I think many people think faith gives them, you'll hear they'll use phrases like, it's something solid to stand on, and what they're saying is it makes me an authority. That's not what faith is supposed to do. Faith doesn't exist to make us authorities. Faith exists to make us seekers, to make us explorers. We're fellow pilgrims on the way, and so we have these stories, and the one thing that is consistent in them, and this is what we can get to, what is the gospel writer trying to tell us? Well, if you read all these stories, there's two things you notice. One, they never recognize Jesus, and two, he always seems to be hungry. Now, this is not because resurrection is hard work. Everyone, do you have anything to eat? Do you have anything? He eats the bread, he eats the fish, he eats, you know. Two things that he always does. He always asks for that, and he never, but they'll never tell you he drinks anything. And the reason is, in Middle Eastern culture, a meal is a sacred symbol of intimacy. Jesus shared meals with his apostles constantly through the gospels, and in the resurrection narrative, they want to make sure that you understand that that intimacy is not lost. That's all they're telling you there. That's why in this one, it's even a little more blatant than that he asked for some fish. He took it and ate it in front of them. The intimacy has not been lost. We can still share a meal. For those of you who are younger, families used to do that around tables. It was crazy. But that intimacy of table, that was so important. And so, it's very obvious in the scriptures that they're constantly having him share the meal. And most scholars will tell you the only reason it never talks about the drink is because, probably out of deference to in Mark's gospel, he says, I will never drink wine again until I drink it with you in my heavenly kingdom. So, the wine is never had at these meals because we still have work to do. The kingdom has not come yet. But there's still that intimacy. The resurrection, for you and I, I think most of us would much prefer if we could have the three years with Jesus walking next to us in such a way that what I always call the user-friendly human interface. You could just ask questions and he would just answer. And a lot of us think that there's an intimacy there that those original disciples had. Oh, wouldn't we have loved to have had that? And what these scriptures say is that intimacy is not lost. The interface is different, but the intimacy is not lost. The new interface, if anything, doesn't allow for as much arrogance. You know, if Jesus was standing here in the flesh and said, oh, that's not the right color for Easter. Hard to argue with. I might go away and say, Jesus told me this, and you can't tell me any different. And let me tell you, there's a lot of people in their prayer life that go through life saying, God told me this, and all of you are wrong. But the arrogance is a little harder to get to. And it's a little more transparent. You know, if someone's been walking around with Jesus and we all know it, we'll allow that arrogance to affect us at a different level. When someone's arrogance comes from the same prayer life you and I have, it won't affect us, you know, because we'll know that the difference between your prayer life and their prayer life is their preexisting personality and maybe a tendency towards arrogance. You know, what's the difference? When someone, I had a vision. I had a vision of Mary or Saint Anthony or Jesus. I had a vision, and he said, I always tell people I have a theory that is pretty much backed up by almost every major spiritual writer over the centuries, and that is God will never give you a revelation about someone else's spiritual life. So when someone comes to you and says, God told me what you're supposed to do, God is whispering in your ear, run the other way. God doesn't tell us, you know, God is not a gossip. God doesn't come down and say, you're doing fine, but I need to tell you a few things about John. That's gossip, and so we tend to domesticate God into images we know, and unfortunately the images we know tend to ride towards arrogance and gossip and those sorts of things, but this new vision of Jesus is not only does he say to people, you will not recognize the Christ, but most people think they get into that, well, you always have to treat people well because you never know, you never know if that could be the angel, that could be Jesus, if that could be, you know, that's, it's really kind of the wrong question because what people are saying is, you know, if it's Jesus, I'll be nice. The actual question is, is it a child of God, and if it's not, who do you think created them? Because I do think most of us go through life with the children of God, and then all those others that may, I don't know, maybe they were created by Bernie the Carpenter or something. Who isn't created by God? That's a fundamental piece of our theology. Who is not a child of God? And people will use the term children of God to mean a certain church or a certain collection of people, but child of God, who is not created by God? And so it's not a matter of beyond your best behavior because that might be a child of God, beyond your best behavior because everyone is a child of God. And when we approach the world with that idea that we can have an intimate relationship with God, not more so than anyone else, not more knowledgeable than anyone else, then we start to find what it is to connect to one another. We start to find God, not within the human heart, but between human hearts. That's when we start to build that kingdom that hasn't come yet in the scripture, but that we pray for every day, we work our lives for, until we finally are finding God in the spaces between human
