A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Praise the Lord. When Judas had left them, Jesus said, now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and God will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. I give you a new commandment. Love one another. As I have loved you, so you should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise the Lord. What is this, sir? This new commandment is new in two different ways. One is, Jesus is teaching a whole new idea, and a bit of the way we all think of it. But it's also new in the sense that John's gospel is written so much later than the others. The earliest, anyone puts it, any well-accepted scholars would be maybe in the 80s. Remember, Jesus would have been crucified in maybe the early 30s. So in the 80s. And the other gospels, somewhere between 60 and 70, and then 15 years later minimum, some put it as late as 100, 110. It's from the next generation. This gospel, he's putting a new spin, the writers are, on the first three gospels. He's saying, the first ones have all said, love people the way you want to be loved. The golden rule. Treat people the way you want to be treated. And he goes, new rule, not like Bill Nye. This is new rules. Love one another. And he says, as I have loved you, love one another. This is much more difficult. This is a whole new level. And my suspicion is they're starting to find how incredible people are at getting around the rules and the ideas of Christianity. As I said last week, God forbid that I love you the way I love myself, because it's dicey from day to day. And Sundays, I love myself less than almost any other day. There's too much going on. So this idea that somehow, how I feel about myself should be how I treat you. No, that's not what he meant, but people could get it there. I can't tell you how often you would say to someone, do we really want to treat someone this way? Pal, if they did that, I would think so, because if I did that, and then they lie to themselves, I would expect to be treated that way. They'd expect to, would they want to? So there were too many ways around it. But this one, love people, and it really, we misquote it often. We often will hear, love one another as I have loved you. It's not what it says. It says, love one another, period. End of sentence, done. Next sentence, as I have loved you, so you should also love one another. But the first one is simply, give up the excuses, love one another. Take care of one another. Do what's best for one another. You mean because we feel good, just love one another. The people that we love one another. My family, love one another. Just my family. I mean, my theory is if you can love family, you can love anyone. Um, you have to live with those people. You know, this whole idea of just, you know, I mean, this is Jesus' Nike moment. Just do it. Just love one another. And you have to have this Christian sense of love. He is not telling you how to feel about one another. He's telling you how to behave towards one another. We are called to take care of people regardless of our inner emotional atmosphere at any given moment. You know, and he says that in the earlier Gospels. He fleshes it out in other ways. He'll say, now, you know, if you just love your friends, anyone can do that. In other words, it's not just about, I feel good about these people, therefore, I will treat them well. And he's not saying you need to feel, you need to have warm, loving, fuzzy feelings. Oh, you should just be absolutely in love with everyone. Actually, George, he kind of discouraged that. Um, it's not, I have to have a warm, fuzzy, you will never have warm, fuzzy feelings about everyone. I mean, you know, there are, literally, there are two people in this room that I don't care for. I can't tell you who they are, but I just wanted you all to worry it might be me. We don't know, but what Jesus says is, get past your feelings. Moral behavior is not based on feeling. And Christian love is the ability to take care of and treat people well, regardless of how I'm feeling at the moment. There is not a marriage in existence that has survived on the consistency of emotion. No one says, oh, we're married, we've been married for 40 years, because every day I wake up, look over, and say, even better than before. Not the journey, folks. It is not the journey. The journey is that I am, I want to be who I am regardless of what someone else has done, how they've made me feel. We don't want to go through life waiting to see what everyone else does before we know who we're going to be. That's not how we live a good Christian life. We have to figure out who we are called to be, and then be that for people that we run across, regardless of how we feel at the moment, regardless of where we're at with our emotions. This entire teaching of John and John's gospel, one of the things he does very different. John has no interest in rewriting the other three gospels. There's three of them. John's students, really, are writing late enough that they already have read those. They know they're out there. They don't say, let's put out a fourth copy. They've got all of these stories that they have probably heard from the Apostle John that didn't make it into those gospels. They want to tell us the other stories. And most of it, well, not most of it, but more than anything else, about 40% of John's gospel is the Last Supper and the Passion and Death. Now, to put that into context, the other three gospels may be between 7% and 12%. Mark has 18 chapters. About one and a half chapter at the end of it is that part of the story, from what you and I would call Holy Thursday, the Last Supper, on. Luke is 24 chapters, the last two. Matthew is 28 chapters, the last two. John is 21, and the last nine of 21 are all the Last Supper. It is the supper that will not end in George's gospel. It is a Dolan family reunion. It goes on and it goes on. And he puts all these teachings in. So we get all of these little, there's these pointed moments that constantly come in, where Jesus keeps stopping and saying, now, I'm only going to be with you a little while longer. Everything is in the context of what's called the Book of Glory in John, from chapter 12 onward. The Book of Glory is all about, here's how you're supposed to be after I'm gone. Because the community at the time this gospel is written, we're almost past it now, but it's similar to us and World War II and the Holocaust now. We're losing the last living witnesses. Are there any left? And we've noticed, as the last witnesses, oh, there's a whole movement out there. Let's rewrite it and say it didn't happen. The revisionists want to step in because the living witnesses. And that's what's happening at this moment when John's gospel is being written. So we're kind of losing all of those. And how do we experience faith having never seen Jesus in the flesh? This is why, at the beginning of the Easter season, we get the Doubting Thomas story, not any of the other gospels. These become important stories. And it's so many of them in the context of, I'm leaving now. There's a wonderful line that we never get. I don't think it ever shows up anywhere in our three-year cycle of readings. We read right up to it. And the next week, we skipped over it. And it's just about right at the beginning of the Last Supper. And he has this wonderful line that says, you're up right now. Jesus is here. And the light is among us. It says, you know what? Walk and keep moving while you're in the light so that the darkness will not overtake you. Use the time you have in the light wiser. The light, you will not always find the light. But when we experience the light of life, when we experience being loved, when we can remember the times in life we are loved, we can build habits out of that. And we can continue the habits, even when we're having a dark day. There are days you will not feel loving towards anyone. At least, I hope I'm not the only one. You will have days. I call them weekday, though. But they'll all have days when we're not feeling that feeling. I think we sometimes forget that the word emotions, it's just the word motion with a little prefix on it. It's that which moves us. You and I don't get to choose our emotions. They move us. We don't move them. They are the mover. And so your emotions can be all over the place. But you can build habits in those moments when you're experiencing love, when you're finding it easy to love others. Let those be habit moments that we really use to say, I need to let that set in. I need to realize that that is a better way of living. And let that carry me through the days I'm not feeling it. I've said this a lot during this season, but I don't think we can understand the theological importance of the crucifixion and the passion if we don't believe that Jesus as God, the big difference between Jesus' suffering and yours and mine, is not his was worse. Trust me, humanity has found ways to torture people longer. That's when they said, it's the worst suffering. And they don't mean that it's physiologically more pain. It was painful. The difference is, as God, Jesus, could have at any moment said, enough. We're done. I'm out of here. And if we lose sight of that, we lose sight of the sacrifice. Because I can guarantee you, Jesus was not on the cross going, I love these people. I feel good about these people. I'm having a warm moment. Why is he on the cross then? Because he's saving the very people who, at that moment, he has no good feelings towards. He's treating them well anyway. Jesus gains nothing from the crucifixion. We do. Jesus was God before he came down. Check the Bible. If you're God, there is no upgrade. He didn't come down to gain something for himself. He was God. What's he hope to gain? He gains for us. And he stays there while we are being terrible, while he couldn't possibly have a good emotion about us, and stays true to who he chose to be. That is the essence of love. As I said last week, it's Italy. It's not just Lebo. It's a wonderful image. It's not just when you've just had the baby and you're holding them in your arms and all the love in the world. That's your emotional love. It's when you get out of bed at 3 in the morning for the fifth time, every night, for the last six months, and the baby is still alive in the morning. You know, you didn't feel. The baby didn't cry and you didn't go, another five minutes with the baby. If you did, bottle that. You could sell it. We do it anyway. We're not feeling. You know, I think there are two things we forget. One is our parents loved us more than we'll ever know. And the other thing, there were times they did not like us. And if you go, oh, not my parents, then they did it spectacularly. No one, you know, everyone is lovable. God has made everyone lovable. No one is likable all the time. We all have moments where we just do things and we don't like ourselves. That's why they get us away from this. People the way you love, you have to love people the way you love yourself. That can be a horrible thing. If I treated you based on how I like myself at the moment, this would be a very different ministry. Sometimes we like ourselves. This is not about like. Like is an emotion. Love is I'm committed to doing what's best for people, regardless of how I feel. We will never get there perfectly in this life. But if we can try, if we can dig into the moments where we have felt the best about ourselves, where we have felt the most cared for, where we have felt the closest to others, and let those be the moments that give us the most lasting habits. Build your habits when you're in the light. Because in the darkness, the habit is what we have to go on, the habit that we built in the light. You're not going to find charity in the middle of the darkness. But if you have built the habit during the light, it will carry us through the darkness.
