A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to the Lord. When the Pharisees, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem... That's not right. I haven't prepared that at all. Peter approached Jesus and asked him, Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times? Jesus answered, I say to you not seven times, but 77 times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, the master ordered him to be sold along with his wife, his children, and all of his property in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full. Moved with compassion, the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him, started to choke him, demanding, Pay back what you owe. Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged, Please be patient with me, and I will pay you back. But he refused. Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison until he paid back the debt. Now when his fellow servant saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed and went to their master and reported the whole affair. His master summoned him and said to him, You wicked servant, I forgave your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have pity on your fellow servant as I have had pity on you? Then in anger, his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will my Heavenly Father do to you unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Today's gospel seems fairly straightforward. Most people read this gospel and just, you know, you can't believe the attitude of someone who's just been let off and goes right out and won't show the same charity to someone else. It's just such a straightforward, easy sort of gospel as long as we don't ever admit that it's about us. As long as it's about that person 2,000 years ago in a strange little situation, in a culture that is so foreign to us, we've just stopped listening to the reading. It's so, I mean, number one, to live in a society where there's clearly, you know, what's called a servant here is a slave. So, you know, you owed him some money, so he's going to sell you. That right there, you know, moral flags right and left. But secondly, you know, along with all of his property, that means his wife, his children, and all the rest of the property. Okay, this culture is so far different from us, you know, most of your families are not considered property, except at tax time. Now, little deductions here and there. And so we have this, we have kind of this strange foreign tale that at first blush doesn't seem to hit us at all. And it's not just about the forgiveness. It's about the way that these negative emotions and things multiply in the world. Because where you would think this story, this man's just been shown a great act of mercy, why doesn't it spur him to be that much more merciful? It seems to do the opposite. And most of us actually respond the same way in many, many situations. I can tell you right now that when someone said to him, they let you off the hook and then you did this, he would have said exactly what we've all said in a million situations, which, well, this was a whole different thing. This was a whole different thing. And probably what happened in that situation is you've been let off the hook, but you really, it got tense for a while, you were humiliated. Many of us, that idea of admitting we've done wrong enough to receive mercy is sort of humbling and humiliating and we don't like it. And he walks right out and he sees someone and he thinks, you know, if those people like this had paid me what they owed me, maybe I'd have been able to pay this off, but this would have never happened in the first place. People go there all the time. People go there all the time where, because it's the blame thing. Something bad happened to me, someone is to blame. And so where you would think if he could stay aware of the sense of mercy he'd received, it would make him more, because of where his heart is at, it makes him less merciful. Now, we could rewrite this for our own culture. It would get very uncomfortable if we put it right at home for a minute and said, you know, Peter says to Jesus, how often do I have to welcome the stranger? And Jesus says, well, you know, countless times. And he says, let me tell you a story. There was an Irishman in a potato famine whose family could no longer survive, so he migrates to another country where he just wants to survive. If I could just survive. And that country gives him welcome. And four generations, they're still surviving. Not as well as they'd like, but they're still surviving. They did survive, they got what they wanted, but they'd like to be a little higher up the totem pole. And as that weighs on them, they go out and find a fellow immigrant and throttle him and say, you don't belong here. Well, that's a little closer to home, isn't it? Our experience, well, it's a totally different thing. They welcomed my grandparents. They don't count now, they're dead. Yes, and they're looking down from heaven going, what happened? It's much more comfortable, or less comfortable, when we're part of the story. Where people who have experienced welcome in life will be that much more welcoming, or will they have that much more, well, I've been welcomed, and I don't want to lose anything that I've been welcomed into, so I don't want to welcome anyone else. So easy to get there. We tend not to be, there tends to be something stopping us, and the first reading tells us what it is, and it's the last thing we ever want to hear. This book of Sirach, I think most people who have had a brief introduction to scripture, but don't really, haven't really pulled it apart, I think if they heard a lot of this book of Sirach, they'd assume it was New Testament. He's so in line with the Gospels, a lot of what Jesus says can be traced back to Sirach, but he starts out with, wrath and anger are hateful things, and literally, that full of hate, hate-filled is sometimes a better translation, and we all know what that means. I mean, we definitely know what cream-filled and chocolate-filled mean. Hate-filled, something that's full of hate. Most of us think the opposite is true. I know this from years in the confessional, where people will do something that's hateful and say, I did it because I was angry, but the scripture says other way around. You were angry because you were already hateful. Anger doesn't make us hate. Hate makes us angry, and we pick and choose who we're gonna hate. I told this story last year, but a college friend of mine, who we were talking about racism, and he said, you don't understand, Pat, you've never been a victim. And I said, what do you mean? He goes, I was walking down in whatever, I can't remember what city he was in at the time, and he said, you know, these three young kids from college age, thin, tall, black kids came at me and they attacked me, and that I have reason. I said, so are you angry at all tall people? All college age? What is it you picked out of that experience? Because whatever you picked out of it is because someone had told you that already and it fit a paradigm you already had. That's why you didn't walk out of there afraid of all tall people. Because if someone tried to tell you it was height, you would go, that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. That makes no sense at all. Someone says, what if it's about race? And you go, huh, you know, maybe. Because they've been preconditioned to fear certain things. And we fall heir to it all the time. And so our hate allows us anger. I was at a dinner two nights ago, and heard the story of these. They said, oh, they were on the plane and this woman gets on with two kids, two babies, and you know, which you're already thinking, oh, she's in for a time, you know. And she's sitting down and of course one of the babies is crying. I'm assuming about halfway through the flight that one stopped and the other started because that's, you know, siblings are good at tag teaming parents. And so the kid is just crying and crying and crying and the plane isn't even taking off. And a man in the back of the plane stands up and says, shut that kid up. Now, the kid didn't make him angry because if it were the kid, then everyone on the plane would have stood up and yelled the same thing. No, he was an angry man. He had that anger before he got on the plane and something came along that he could show that, that's why he was an angry man. The child didn't make him angry. The mother didn't make him angry. Hate makes us angry and it's easier to hate some people than others. And we can put any label we want on, but we're not gonna, if we can't welcome in everyone, where will it end if we welcome everyone? Heaven, that's where. Or not, if we so choose. That's where it will end because that's our faith. Our faith is, that's who we are. Jesus welcomes us. All of us have known countless goodness that we don't know that goes back generations. And we tend to go through life very aware of our achievements and not so aware of what's gotten us where we're at. That's why when people get to the end of a college career, they will often tell you if they've got high grades, it's because of their hard work. And you know, if they did well, it's because of their hard work. And if there's a debt left, that's someone else's fault. We all, you know, anything that went wrong, someone is to blame and we've got to figure out who's to blame. And everything that went right, we don't want to look back and say, yeah, you know, generations ago, my family was welcome and they've done well and they've stayed on top of it. And I grew up not worrying about a house and I was actually able to do homework and my parents bought clothes for me that I didn't like and I was forced to wear those gifts. And we don't admit, it never occurs to us the amount of gift that is. And instead we go out and say, they can't have that gift. It's the same story. It tells us that not only does hate do anger, hate creates anger, not the other way around, but then it says, and can anyone nourish anger and expect healing? You know, first step to all healing is get rid of the anger. Let go of it. And I know I've been there, especially at a family dynamic when you really got a good mad go and you hate to let it go. Because there's a righteousness in my anger, which is interesting because there's never a righteousness in my sibling's anger, but in mine, I can see the righteousness. I'm going to hold the light. All I'm going to do is undo myself. Father Tom Allender always said, you know, staying angry with other people is drinking poison to get back at them. Almost everyone here can pull up an event from the past that they're still angry about. And if you think about it enough, you can spin your whole evening away angry. And I can guarantee that person across the country that you're angry at is not having a bad evening. You're just destroying your own life. You cannot heal. You know, people will say, well, you know, the family needs closure when there's a tragedy in a family and we want that person put to death. We want that person, because the family needs healing. No one ever heals through anger. You know? Well, their revenge will be fed. That won't heal them. And if it does heal them, then we've got a really sad society, if that's what we're thinking is healing. Because we don't want healing. Sometimes we want vengeance. And that's today's readings. You have to choose. Do you want vengeance? Do you want healing? So I say to people, do you want to be right or do you want to be healed? The journey to heaven is a journey of healing. It's a journey where we learn to let go of anger. But first we have to admit our capability of hate and put it down and ask ourselves, why is it so easy to be angry at that person and when someone else does the same thing, I'm less angry? Yeah, because I've let the hate rest over here for a while. Not you guys specifically. Okay, one of you, but I won't say who. You know, I've let the hate rest somewhere for a while and then it's easier to pick on them. It's easier to get mad. I know that at least half of us in this room, we don't like to use the word, but there's at least half of us that can find a political figure we hate right now. And you could say, oh, I don't hate him. I just, you know, I don't hate him. I don't hate her. I just like to read bad things about him all the time and be angry. That's hate. That's it. You're there. You know, sure you didn't send a bomb through the mail and we thank you for that, but that's still hate. How do we get past the hatred? Because it's not hurting anyone but us and we're just consumed with it. And Jesus says today, through the prophets of old, he says, let go of the anger. Let go of the hatred. Then you can know healing.
