A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him. God forbid, Lord, no such thing shall ever happen to you. He turned and said to Peter, get behind me, Satan. You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. Then Jesus said to his disciples, whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father's glory, and then he will repay all according to their conduct. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. There is an African word that we're going to learn today. Ubuntu. Ubuntu. Ubuntu. This is a great word to throw into your spiritual arsenal. It's a good spiritual word to keep in your sort of your bag of skills. And that is, it was brought to light through Archbishop Tutu. And he certainly brought it into prominence in the world. And today's gospel shows a lot of it. You have to understand it. We'll get back to the word in a minute. Jesus, it says, he shows them that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. Now, Jesus probably never actually told him that. You know, that's Matthew 30, 40 years later looking back, saying, he's showing them what's going to happen, not that he knew that exactly. We can all look back religiously, culturally, politically, and say, oh, you know, you can start to see the roots of where this was going to happen 30 years early, 20 years earlier. It doesn't mean that those people at that time articulated the exact view. If Jesus really had said to them, I'm going to go, I'm going to die, I'm going to die for three days after the cross, and then I'm going to be raised again, if he knew all that ahead of time, then to be on the cross and yell out, my God, why have you abandoned me? The answer would have been, you knew all this was coming. What are you talking about? It's not what it is. So, but what is he starting to show them? He's starting to show them that he's going to tell the truth about who he is. He's going to walk the walk of the prophets, which they would have all seen coming a mile away. The prophets end up martyred. And the prophets do the same thing in every age. They did it in the Old Testament and the Hebrew scriptures. They do it at the time of Jesus. They do it nowadays. They do it in religion. They do it in politics. They do it everywhere. And that is prophets speak the truth to those in power. And they usually end up not in a good place. When you speak the truth to those in power, because the truth is usually, you aren't any more important than the poor person on the street. And power does not much like to hear that. And so, you know, it's fascinating to watch. So he is very clearly letting them see who he is. And this is one of the few places in all of scripture that we kind of see Jesus lose his temper. He's pretty harsh with Peter. Peter, just last week, Peter, what you just said, you are speaking like God and not like people. This week, you are speaking like people and not like God. Peter has good weeks and bad weeks. But why this reaction? He doesn't just say, he calls him Satan. He goes, why? Because I really believe that Jesus, while we can tell one another Jesus is without sin, that doesn't mean without temptation. And you want to see someone react a little harshly, try to seduce them into something that there's a little part of them that could go there pretty easily. You know, this is the person who's really, really, really, really trying to stay on their diet. And you keep saying, eat a little more. Eat a little more. You're up, eat, it's chocolate cake, eat some. And finally, they're like, no. Now, they aren't really that mad over cake. It's there's a part of them that would just love to give in, but they know better. Certainly, people who deal with addiction, someone who deals with alcoholism and is dealing with it well, knows that in the first several months of their sobriety, they can't be around those people that want them to drink with them. Because that pull is there. So of course, there's a Jesus who says, if this cup can pass me by, let it pass me by. But Peter and the disciples who keep trying to talk him out of it, it'd be so easy to give in. And his reaction is really harsh. This is what we all have to understand. This is where this word ubuntu comes in, in the Xhosa language. And anyone who speaks a Clic language will tell you I did that very poorly. But in the Clic language, Xhosa, there's a phrase, again, that Archbishop Desmond Tutu brought into the forefront in Western society. And the phrase, which is untunugu untunugu banta, which is people are people through persons, it doesn't translate well. What it means is that your humanity, being fully human, is not about what's going on inside. Being fully human is about belonging to the community. Being a person comes through persons. And the whole philosophy says, if you can't be fully who you are, then I cannot be fully who I am. That there is a reciprocity to humanity that is at a deeper level than we could possibly imagine. And that it's not just a political statement when someone says, oh, if one of us is diminished, we're all diminished. It really means if we live in a society where some of us are diminished, we are not fully human yet. Our humanity is not there. And so we all have to put out the messages, put out the vibrations of our own life that bring out that best in one another. We have to create that society where people can truly bring, with integrity, who they are into the society. Jesus could get out of the cross. All he'd have to do is stop being who he is so openly. You know, all he has to do is fall in line and say, oh, you're right. Not the Son of God. That would be blasphemy. You're not going to run around forgiving sins. Only God can do that. That would be blasphemy. He could give in to that and stop being who he is and avoid the whole thing. And that's why he counters it with, what good would that be if you lose yourself, if you lose who you are in the process? What good is all the world? See, in that Ubuntu philosophy, what that says is, you know, if you're rich, if you're good looking, if you're successful, if you're strong, all of those things in that culture, those are lesser qualities. The great quality is to be connected to each other through compassion. And a person who doesn't have that is diminished, no matter how good life looks from the outside. If we don't have that, we're diminished. And so Peter and probably the other disciples are starting to put out a different vibration. They're saying, don't do it, don't do it. It's going to be hard. That's not a good thing. And Jesus has to fight that. I think we look at our society and we look at the last couple of years of politics and how easy it's been for all of us to get on Facebook, get on Twitter, and get lost in the most negative vibrations of society, even to the point where we can't wait to find the next witty, nasty thing they said about whoever we're mad at. And that starts to become what we're putting out there. And I don't think we understand the danger of that kind of resonance. I love, as a musician, I love the ideas of resonance because there's two experiments I always do with sometime during the year every year with the school kids. The first one is a resonance experiment that you've all done. You've all learned the fundamentals of resonance. You learned it in the bathtub as a child. Everything has its own natural speed of resonance, including water. And a lot of people don't realize this, but if two speedboats are going down out on a lake and one is going at 100 miles an hour and another is going 30 miles an hour, the waves of the water coming out will be the same speed. Water only moves at one speed. It has its own resonance. And some of the waves may be bigger in amplitude, but they'll be going at the same speed. You cannot speed up a ripple or slow it down. You can just affect the intensity of it. The same happens in the bathtub. You probably learned at a fairly young age that if you moved at just the right speed, you could get that water over the edge of the tub in no time. Ah, the memories. I can still remember. I think that's the speed right there. I think I still remember it. I can hear my mother screaming in the background as I do it. And if you went too fast, you'd fight the wave coming back against you. If you went too slow, you'd fight the wave. If you got right to the right speed, you would resonate the water, and that slow motion would become incredibly powerful. This happens with music. You know, violin strings, piano strings, they're all tightened to a different resonance. I'm going to actually ask Paul to put down the damper pedal. And if I, it doesn't matter what note I hit, if I come over here and I'm steady enough and I go, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, you can vibrate a string. More fascinating, none of the other strings vibrated. It wasn't the right resonance for them. But the one string, because all that is is pressure variations coming out at that certain speed, picked the one string that could vibrate at that speed. In the movies and things, that's how a soprano would break glass. There's a pitch just under high C that is the natural resonance of crystal. And so they would, just like that piano string, they'd get that moving until it cracked. We resonate spiritually all the time with positive stuff and negative stuff. And we tend to gather people to ourselves. Teresa Stone showed me or talked to me about an article just before that she read on bees. Honeybees and regular bees. And the difference is not only, I went red quick, not only in how they pollinate, but how they know what hive they belong to has to do with the resonance they put out. And I think that is so true of us. The resonance we put out tells us immediately the tribe we belong to and how we're forming the world. And that we need to be people who resonate hope. We need to be the people who refuse to resonate what is ugly and mean-spirited in the world. We need to resonate more of a sense of universal welcome. Teresa spoke at the beginning about singing in another language. The psalm they did today, I wrote that as part of a set of psalms called Psalms for the Global Village. And I did it because about 15 years ago, there was a lot of talk about, you know the psalms, we're gonna have to go back to chant because it's the only way you can get all the right words into the psalm. You're not, you know a lot of people to get melody, they would just change the text of the psalm radically. And the only way to get that fixed would be to go back to the old way and get into that very narrow chant. Or, and that's the Roman method. There's Roman Catholicism. The Roman method is to go back into chant. The Catholic method is to go universal. And so I thought, well let's just look at some different cultures. And with that, that's a pentatonic free form. Very common Asian form of music. In gospel communities, you have forms of scat which are very easy to fit any kind of number of syllables you can. So I went through all these different cultures and set psalms in the music of the different cultures. And they come out melodic, and you don't have to change a single word. It can be done. If we reach out with resonance and invite in everyone. If we reach out with resonance and be a people of hope who say, you know, we can be part of the solution. We don't have to be part of sitting around going, here's what's wrong. Here's what's wrong with the church. Here's what's wrong with the country. Here's what's wrong with my family. Here's what's wrong with my friends. Here's what's wrong. And that's all we resonate. You know, that's really why gossip is a sin because we just sit around and resonate negativity. You know, if you really do sit around and gossip behind people's back and say, you know, they're amazing. That would not be a sin. And isn't it interesting? No one would even call it gossip, even though it's the same thing. When we talk about someone behind their back, we call it gossip. What that meant is, no, no, we trashed someone behind their back. But when it's positive, we don't consider it in that same vein. What are we resonating to the world? Are we like Peter? Are we giving into fear? You know, when he couldn't walk on the water, fear. When he can't let Jesus go to that cross, fear. We either resonate fear or we resonate hope. We are a people of great resilience. We all have wounds. And it's very easy to say, those wounds make us who we are. No, the resilience that gets us through those wounds makes us who we are. And we can resonate that in our stories and what we choose to share with one another, in how forthright we are about who we are with one another, bringing ourselves into the light, that resonates hope. Jesus did it story after story after story. And it's still with us today. Each of us could resonate hope and tell the community around us resonates hope. And then the country around us resonates hope. And then we resonate hope to the world. That resonance that we have, it's more power than we can imagine. It does things we'd never heard of.
