At that time, Jesus exclaimed, I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Father except the Son, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him. Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart. And you will find rest for yourselves, for my yoke is easy and my burden light. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you. If you were to look back on your life, especially over the last couple years, and look to the last time you really admitted to yourself, especially in areas of religion, politics, social economics, that sort of thing, the last time you had an argument with someone and admitted to yourself you lost the argument, and you walked away thinking a little differently. Now, most of us can't think of the last time that happened. And the sad thing is, it's another way of simply asking, when was the last time you experienced any real growth? Because most of us have gotten locked into one way of thinking. We know, you know, everyone talks about the news, and is it fake news, is it real news, is it, it's not the news, it's us. We filter for our favorite news. We go through, whether we use our Facebook page or our Twitter feed, or we actually go out and listen to our favorite station, all of us, we do not go to the news to be informed, we go to the news to be reassured that we're right. And we all pick our news accordingly. So, no one wants to be informed. You know, the worst tragedy for an American is if the other side is ever right. And we'll fight just because we don't want them to be right. And this happens in our faith, too. We define ourselves by who we are not. You know, we too often, in the Catholic Church, it becomes, you know, well, we're not saying they're not welcome, they just can't receive communion. Those ones, those ones, those people over there, you know, they don't merit communion. Which is true, of course, none of us merit God. And so I always tell people that, you know, once the priest has received communion, we're already past who merits it. Yeah. We don't merit it anymore. Who merits God? So, how do we get to a point where we start to actually allow one another to inform us? And this gospel today talks about, and there's a little bit of cultural code you have to get through. But Jesus says, you know, God has hidden things from the wise and learned and revealed them to the little ones. Now, the little ones, the children in this day and age of the reading, there's a custom in Jewish law, especially very prevalent at that time, that in any kind of rabbinical court, when witness testimony is taken, witnesses must be male, Jewish, and over the age of a bar mitzvah. Or you're not a valid witness. So, what he's saying is, there's a whole wisdom in the world of people you have decided have nothing to offer you. It is exactly the people that you are sure have nothing to offer you. I mean, how many people have literally this year said, well, because of the way they voted, I have lost friends. You know, do you remember when we lived in an adult country that you could disagree and remain friends? You know, before all of a sudden, if they disagree with me, they're the enemy. My need to be right is so connected to my self-worth that if someone disagrees with me, I can no longer hang around them. And we don't want to admit the truth, which is we've just made a hierarchy of needs because everyone disagrees with you on something. If you don't believe me, ask your spouse. Everyone disagrees with you on something. And we've put things, some of them we just don't care about. But if I care about it, how dare you disagree with me? Rather than, if I care enough about a topic, you would think I would like to engage with people who think differently. How, you know, when I'm looking at my faith, when I'm looking at my relationship with God, when I'm looking at politics, when I'm looking at social interaction, do I set out to become more informed or to get people to see things my way? The two do not coexist well. If I enter into a dialogue to change you, then I have given up on growth. And none of us do that anymore. It is the difference, a friend of mine put a fairly lengthy little video on Facebook this week, and it's amazing because I only check in about four times a year. It's the most I can do. But I saw, and he was talking about the difference between what he, he said this is the difference between spirituality and religion. And he went on and on, he really kind of hedged around the differences between spirituality and psychology, and he came up with some interesting ideas, but I don't think he ever really got to the crux of it because his agenda was spirituality is good and religion can get so bad. But the truth is, spirituality is religion that is not in dialogue with anyone. When someone in our country, at least, when I say I'm spiritual but not religious, it means I'm spiritual, but no one is going to talk to me about that journey, and I'm not gonna be part of a community, and it's not gonna be a, it's my, keep your hands off my spirituality. And it's a very solo journey. Religion, I mean, no one wants to admit it, but if you've got three friends that you talk your spirituality with, you've already started a religion. You're figuring out what you have in common and what's different, and you're coming to some consensus and some, now the difference between a religion and a cult is whether or not there's room for disagreement. And trust me, there are a lot of people that would like Catholicism to be a cult. No disagreement. This is what we believe, and if we get a new bishop tomorrow who thinks differently, then you and I will believe differently. There are people that that's their vision. And religion has to, at its best, live somewhere between cult and just spirituality. It's religion in, it's spirituality in real dialogue, and that means that we are in community with people we do not always agree with. If we could get that at our country level, we would look at a whole, we would be a totally different people. Look at what's happening, the whole, all of the protests in Europe right now, because there are some people who are saying, we don't want the universal, we don't want the global, let's get us back down to tribes so that I don't have to worry about anyone outside my own group. Let me get back down to the people who think like I do, and we take care of ours, and to heck with them. There's a lot of that that people are making seem very palatable. I think in our own country, especially as we get into these arguments now over minimum wage and healthcare and all of these things, people love to think that that is right against left. It isn't. Right and left, totally made up concepts. Socioeconomic battles are always poor against rich. They're always top against bottom. It's not right against left. It's always those in need against those who have. And we don't like to admit that, because that might make us feel like a bully, depending on what side we're on at any minute. So instead, we just like to say, oh, it's just different ideologies. It's usually, as it was in the gospel time, those in power and those in need. It's always top and bottom. And so, you know, what happens when we start to say, sometimes those who are the ones we would never go to, because they are just such a mess, what if they have really what we need to learn? Who is it in our life we're not open to? I, at our last Mass, I'm listening to the baby here, this is, at our last Mass, we had this weird thing go on where a baby back here started crying, and then the minute they started crying, one of the baptism babies went, and then someone over here went. And all of a sudden, we had about seven of them, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And some people found that irritating. Now, my theory was they were plotting our overthrow. You all have 15 years tops. But it did, I thought, you know, I mean, they're babies, so I don't want to be insulting, but all I could think of was Planet of the Apes. We don't understand a word. But there is, you know, every parent knows that when you start to see the world through the eyes of a child that is just discovering it. You know, this is why people love to take children to Disneyland. Because you and I see some poor soul in the hottest Mickey Mouse costume in the world, traipsing through the street, and they see magic. We get to see the world through their eyes. But it's an easy, comfortable move. It's not someone who totally disagrees with us till they hit adolescence. And then what happens? Do we grow through that? Do we allow others to change us? Because what a ridiculously arrogant position to go out into the world and say, I don't get changed by you, but I'm trying to change you from my opinion. Why? And of course, and the church does. The church does do this, so we're as guilty as anyone else. It's this, well, it's because I have the truth and I'm right and you're wrong. I'm not changing you, just the eternal truth that keeps coming through me. And the eternal wrong that keeps coming through you. We just rewrite the mythology to say, well, of course the world will be better when everyone thinks like I do. It's a fascinating thing when we really think, what does it mean to look to your life? Maybe it's a sibling. Maybe it's a family member. Maybe it is something on a bigger world stage. But what happens if we at least listen and think, you know, I wonder if they have something that I don't have. What about, you know, I've got siblings who really, they struggle in life. I've got one sibling who has spent most of his adult life just one step this side of the streets and not terribly attached to church. It would be very easy to say, you know, he barely has his life together. What could he possibly offer me? And yet sometimes he has all the things that I think, oh, there's the piece I didn't have. I always remember my father, the one man in the world I have never won an argument with. And not because he was harsh or, I mean, the man just had a mind that I couldn't believe in. And every once in a while I thought, okay, now I got him. And every once in a while I was wrong. But one time we were talking, my father never went to church again after Vatican II. And he was not someone that I would have thought, he didn't have any problems with the ideology. He hated that the mass was not in Latin anymore. And, you know, as I got into seminary and now I knew everything, I had this conversation with him and I said, so, now dad, I have never even heard you speak Latin. Are you really telling me you understood Latin? And, you know, and I'm thinking, I got him, got him, finally, I was only 26, got him. And he said, well, no, of course not. He said, your generation goes to mass to understand. We went to experience mystery. So close, I was so close. We didn't want to understand it. We wanted to experience a mystery, to experience something we don't understand, to sit in what the mystics would call a cloud of unknowing and be in touch with the fact that we don't understand everything. Very different place, two very different models of church. I understood what he missed. Wouldn't be my cup of tea, but I understood. You know, he had a different approach. And most people would say, your father hadn't been to church in 30 years. Why would you go to him for religious advice? Because he had the experience that wasn't mine. Why go to myself? And so all of us, I think, need to build out and figure out we know who we are, but can we start to reach out more? People who are secure in who they are are not put off by another opinion. They're not put off by being wrong once in a while. You know, it's so fascinating that all of us will look back 10 years and say, man, I didn't know anything 10 years ago, but none of us are willing to admit that in 10 years, we're gonna look back to right now and say the same thing. Right, now we're gonna look back and go, yeah, I thought I had it together. And if you can look back 20 years and say you knew it all, that just means you haven't grown in 20 years. Hopefully, you will look back and say, oh yeah, I was like, you know, someone will say to me, I found an article you wrote 20 years ago, and I'm like, I don't wanna see it. I don't, was God an old white man in a cloud with lightning coming out of his hand? Who was I back then? We don't know, but are we willing? Who is the last person we allowed to change us, not reinforce us, but change us? Because otherwise, we've decided journey over, game done. We're there or we're not. And one of the things I love most about Catholicism, I know this makes me sound even more bizarre, but it's purgatory. Because without purgatory, what it says is, when you die, game's over. You're either in heaven or you're in hell. No more growth, no more nothing. Game's over, you can't learn anymore. If you become good, it doesn't count. Become bad, it doesn't count. Game over. And purgatory says, game's never over. Game's not over. God's grace is still there. You can still learn. You can still become more. It's a great moment. But I think most of us have already given up here. I know what I think. I already know. God has revealed in my heart. I am right and you are wrong. What a place to be. Rather than, even as a church, to say, you know, we can't define ourselves by what we know. The difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is the accumulation of your experience. Wisdom is how you receive the knowledge of another. That's your wisdom. And today, we're called to recognize the wisdom that lies in others. Because you may have all the knowledge you could possibly want, but until you receive the knowledge of those who think differently, you don't have a chance at wisdom and we don't have a chance at
