My daughter is tormented by a demon. But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus' disciples came and asked him, Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us. He said in reply, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. But the woman came and did Jesus' homage, saying, Lord, help me. He said in reply, It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs. She said, Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters. Then Jesus said to her in reply, O woman, great is your faith. Let it be done for you as you wish. And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. I have been thinking a lot about this week the concept of love at first sight. And it doesn't mean I have news for you and I'm out of here. It's an interesting, you know, psychology and different schools of thought. We'll talk about what is love at first sight. Is there really such a thing as love at first sight? And actually, very many people who have worked on this, many of the, probably even the majority of opinions will tell you that the majority of people who fall in love will tell you the experience of falling in love at first sight. Now, we don't always call it that because what happens is you see someone, you fall in love with the image of him or her at first sight, and then it's a long journey to try and figure out whether that person is actually what you think you fell in love with. But the experience of falling in love is immediate. You know, you'll find, especially when you get into that sort of romantic, chemical attraction, it does not come on slowly. You know, it is boom. I can't tell you how many women have talked to me over the years that would probably be in better shape if they sat down as a teenager and wrote out, here's everything I want, here's everything I think a man should be, and then Johnny the bad boy in a leather jacket walks in and something immediate happens. That feeling of love at first sight is based on, to a large degree, our ability to take whoever we just saw in front of us, give them a complete personality ectomy, and replace it with our fantasy personality, and then start the journey of actually seeing who that person is. And so love is at first sight, but we only love as much as we know, and it takes a while to figure out whether that love at first sight really correlates to the reality in front of us. This is the same thing with much of our spirituality. God is probably the most dangerous first date you will ever have, because many of us have an image of God. None of us can really know who God is. None of us can get our minds totally around God, and so in the end we pick something of God to become our whole picture. And unfortunately, unlike someone you date, God is, well, actually this might be exactly like some of the people you date, but God's not a big talker. You ever feel like you're holding up both sides of the conversation? We call that prayer. I know and I am well aware when I am praying and when I'm talking to God that I, you know, the part of God this evening will be played by Patrick Dolan. Fascinating he uses all the same words I would. I have always told people that I will know that it is a almost magical level revelation from God when God says something to me in prayer and I have to go look up one of the words in the dictionary. Wouldn't that be an exciting moment? So we know, so what is that? So what we're doing in our head, what we call contemplative prayer and prayers, often that we have to imagine what God would say to us. And hopefully that imagination is well informed. You know, when I imagine a conversation with God, you know, the voice of God never says, just smack him and get on with it. Because the image of God is better formed than that. But we are all called to be better theologians than we usually are. Most of us are better at a million other things in spirituality than theology. And what that means is we have a better idea of what we want the church to be, what we want the sacraments to be, what morals should be. We've got a better idea of all of that stuff, heaven and hell, than what each belief we have says about God. Catherine of Siena, I've told you this vision dozens of times over the years. Catherine of Siena had a vision very similar to Teresa of Avila, very similar to some of the saints. This vision of hell. Now, Catherine of Siena, I would contend, of all the saints, was one of the greatest theologians. Now there are people who wrote bigger treatises on the church, but those are ecclesiologists. Or on the spirit, pneumatology. Theology. Everything she thought, she said, what does this say about God? And what's my image of God? And so she had the same vision most of them had of hell. Swirling fire and lakes of fire and brimstonia. And her image ends with, and it was empty. Because that's her vision of God. Once you say God is all powerful and God is all loving, and people say, well, what about the unbaptized? That's your philosophy of sacraments. Well, what about people who did this? That's your philosophy of morality. She's dealing with theology, her vision of God. Now when you go through scripture, if you don't have a vision of God, you will come out with absolutely no help at all. You have the God of love who heals everyone. Earlier on you've got the God who gets upset, wipes out the world with a flood, and then afterwards says, I really regret that, here's a rainbow. The God who says, oops. You've got stories in there of like Jonah, where because Jonah did the right thing, God repented of the evil he was going to do. What, God does evil? The Bible is a compendium of many, many images and visions of God that we are called to reflect on. But you are the final filter. And what you say about God, what you believe about God, in many ways will tell us who you are. In the same way, it would be a fascinating, if somewhat unromantic experiment through someone's teens and early 20s, if every time one of those, I fell in love at first sight, turned out three weeks later to be not so great, instead of doing what most of us do, which is start a list in our head of everything that was horrible and awful with that person, to get a better vision of, so who did I think she was? Who did I think he was? Who do we think that other person is? After, you know, after an expected period of trial and failure, you would have a real great idea, this is what I'm looking for. This is what made this person, you know, I fell in love with, what did I really fall in love with? Do we have a sense of who that is? It wasn't that person as it turned out. But do we know what that ideal person is? Because it would tell you a lot about who you are. And it is always interesting when you say to people, what are you looking for in your, you know, your life mate, future spouse, what are you looking for? And it's, you would think everyone would come up with the same thing, but they don't. Loyalty, honesty, those two usually don't go together. If I need them to lie for me, are they going to be honest or loyal? You know, what's, you start to say, this is what I really want. In a future spouse, you learn a lot about yourself. But we don't, what we normally know is, I can tell you all the places they fell short. And we just get better images of what we don't like. If we do that with God, we get a better image of the God we don't want. And so today we have three radically different visions of God coming from scripture. And how do we decide between those? It will depend on our filter. You know, if you are mean and need God to be mean and need God to be, God is going to get those people over there eventually. You know, you will hang on to, you will cherry pick through scripture and get what you want. We used to call them in seminary the hateful mysteries of the rosary. If that is your vision of God, you could read all four gospels and come away with the five hateful mysteries. Jesus kills a herd of pigs. Jesus calls his best friend Satan. Jesus tells his mother to mind her own business. Jesus spits in the eye of a blind man. And today, Jesus tells this woman, you know, that she is a dog. So we don't walk away with that image of Jesus because we look at these stories and we go, wait, wait, wait, wait. My God image demands that I look a little deeper on this. How could this be the same person that says, let the little children come unto me? Because that would be just as problematic as the Canaanite woman. The kids, the women, it was all. It was, culturally, he would have shirked them all. And so, where I have come with, with this reading over the years, is there's a line in here where it says the disciples say, send her away, she keeps calling out after us. And he says in reply, and that's important because in the story, he doesn't say it in reply to the woman. He says it in reply to the disciples. The disciples want a God, for a long time in the story, the disciples always seem to want a God who will send the problem people away. The children are calling out, don't let the children come near us. You know, I, it's all matter of perspective. I was joking with a parent about the fact that, you know, it's, I'm sure it's just coincidence that tomorrow all the kids are coming back to school and the sun itself is going away. The mother said to me, oh, I think you're, you're looking a little too early in the day. The way I see it, the children are going back to school tomorrow and then the sun comes back forever. You know, you know, how we look at these things. But, we do have this point that says, so how do we look at the story? Well, he says to them, they say, stop the Canaanite woman coming from, stop the unclean man from calling out after us, he's an embarrassment. Stop the children from coming back. It's an embarrassment, it's an embarrassment. And finally he replies and gives them the God they want. And it's the last time we hear one of these sorts of stories in the chronology of that gospel. As though the lesson is taught. There was a film a few years ago called, The Hundred Foot Journey. Helen Mirren played a very sort of uptight, buttoned down, owner of a French restaurant in a little town on a dirt road and right across the street moves in an eastern Indian family that's going to open up just sort of a, a real down home, wild, spices in the air sort of restaurant. And all of this partying and music and you know, her restaurant is, it's cordon bleu all the way and very, and she's horrified. And she's horrified and she starts making little snipes around her staff about those sorts of people. Those sorts of people. And the staff take it and run with it. And about halfway through the movie, a couple members of her staff go out, vandalize the place, start a fire, ride out, prance for the French. And she gets up the next morning and she realizes her part in that. That she herself would never have done that but a little spout out the hate here and hate there and gets them going. And from that point on, she becomes friends to the people across the street because she realizes there's no middle road. You either become a voice for hate or you become a voice for reconciliation. The disciples today keep saying, get rid of those people! Get rid of those! And finally Jesus says, okay. And he's worse to her than I'm sure they expected. Now he knows he's going to do the healing. She gets what she wants. There's reconciliation by the end. But for just a minute, give them a glimpse. Is this what you really want? And you hope they come away changed. You hope they go, yeah, let's stop asking for that. And we as a people, let's stop asking for the partisan God. The God that likes our side better than theirs. The opening reading has a little bit of that. Though in our country right now, I think of the white supremacist movement and they'd be real horrified to know that the scriptures only give us a Jewish supremacist movement. We're not mentioned. You know, the foreigners who join themselves could come in on the coat strings. By the way, we are the foreigners in that reading. The Jewish people are the ones. We could have that. We could decide to be a people that equality is not our thing. That we like supremacy better. We could go there. It's just not us. And the minute we decide that we're not all created equal, it's not American either. My dad used to joke about people in the world who feel that we're all created equal. There's just some that are more equal than others. You can't... Equality and supremacy are diametrically opposed positions. And so, you have that here. Or you have the second reading that says, you know, God delivered everyone into disobedience so that God could show mercy to everyone. What that means is all of us screw up. And all of us are forgiven. And you think of how much church and how much, not just ours, all churches, churches and religion run around saying, God is all forgiving. I mean, except for you people. God is all forgiving. Except for those ones over there. God is all forgiving except for that group. Because there's part of us that floats between that belief that God is all loving, that Catherine of Siena belief, and the disciples today that still want God to send someone away. We're caught between two contrary images that both come to scripture. You're always going to read through scripture and you're going to have to be the final filter that can decide the difference in importance between thou shalt not kill and thou shalt not eat shellfish. They're both in scripture. They're both in the same book. And I will still not put killing on level with a plate of scampi. We've got all of that in our scripture. What is our filter? Who are we as a people that truly believe that God created everyone? What is our theology? In other words, what is everything we do and everything we believe say about God? You know, give me a minute. I heard her go down. What do we do with that moment that says everyone counts? Because everyone counts to God. How do we learn to live with one another? What happens when everyone being a child of God, everyone being created equal, really becomes the foundation of the way we live rather than something historic we bring up once in a while? What if that's the foundation? Is that every person you encounter is beloved of God? Every person you encounter has messed up for the sole purpose of God being merciful. What happens when we become so aware of who we are and our own need for mercy that we can no longer judge another person? That's the God we have to fill in the gaps. Many of us, love at first sight was with a God image that might not have been that great. And as we grow up we realize that's not the God we want to be in love with. We don't want to be in love with the vision of God that likes these people and not these people. We don't want to be in love with the God who loves you until you mess up. I just don't want to spend eternity in heaven walking on eggshells because he could go off the edge at any minute and send another flood. What's your image of God? We have to start to filter our images a little better. When we go to scripture, you can come away with any number of images. And when you do, you will see the God you are falling in love with. And in the end, it will not tell you much about God. It will tell you everything about who you're becoming. We, in our faith, are called through the gospel to preach the God who loves every person. And not only that, who loves every person equally. That right there is enough work for the rest of our lives. To love every person equally. What happens when we respond to the stranger on the street as though it were one of our relatives we just ran into? What happens when we move beyond that tribalism to a vision that includes every person created by God? We may never get there emotionally, but just like the little dialogue in our head, we can have a well-informed vision of what we're to move towards. And whether we're emotionally there or not, we take care of everyone because we really believe it's what we're called to do. I think when we do that, we start to see a kingdom of God that reaches to the ends of the earth.
