A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and proceed him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain to pray by himself, and when it was evening, he was there alone. Meanwhile, the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. It is a ghost, they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, Take courage in his eye, do not be afraid. Peter said to him in reply, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. He said, Come. Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me. Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. The Gospel of the Lord. Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ. This has long been perhaps my favorite passage in all the Gospels. Mostly because Peter is such a colossal mess. He succeeds more than anyone, he fails more than anyone. He is the fully alive person. You know, there are, we don't hear any of the stories of those who, none of them failed because they sat in the boat and did nothing. What we always hear is the story of the one who kind of just lunges out into the deep and takes the hits. And it really is who we're called to be. But there's a moment in this story that I think we sometimes miss. And for years I've read this and thought, that is just a moment that doesn't make any sense. And yet today it makes new sense for me. And it is the moment when Peter, it says, Jesus is still far enough off that they can't see him. They don't know who it is, but he says, it's me. And Peter comes up with what I have always assumed was one of the most, oh, just not a good idea litmus tests he could have. You know, Lord, if that's really you, tell me to come to you on the water. Yeah, because if it was someone else, they wouldn't have told, you know. Couldn't you just see the devil going, okay, sure. I mean, it's rather like someone knocking on your door at night and an unfamiliar voice says, let me in, it's your mom. And if you say, if you're really my mom, use the key under the mat. I mean, you know, so Peter says, if it's really you, but I think this is the genius of it. I think this is the core piece of our spirituality that if we grab, takes us to a new place. What he says is, if that's really you, God, put me to the test. Would that be the thing we'd come up with? If it's really God, put me to the test. Most of us, if it's really God, cure Aunt Hazel. Get me a job. Do something I want you to do. Show me the magic. If it's really God, call me to the challenge. It's an amazing moment. Call me into the storm. I'm already hiding in the boat. You call me even more into the storm if it's God. It's a far cry from the first reading that says, oh, you know, don't look in the storm. God will be in the gentle, quiet wind. God is in the gentle, quiet wind. Not nearly as often as we'd like. Often God is in the storm. Yesterday, I got both. You know, I went on a bike ride in the morning, and it was just one of those great mornings. I mean, it was the perfect Colorado morning, other than the fact that I'm now noticing that people are riding down the Cherry Creek Trail at Mach speed while texting on bikes now. But you know me. I don't complain about anything. But it was a great morning. And then I get home to all the news about Charlottesville. And I think, where are we? That's the storm. And I'm interested to hear and see how many churches will soft sell the message today because we don't want to delve too deeply into the storm. You know, you've watched social media blow up. And they're going after us. Well, we're Americans. They're going after all of our political leaders. But listen to our church leaders as well. They're not making nearly the strong statements they should. Well, you know, all sides, everyone, there's a lot of tension. And we condemn all sorts of hatred and violence. Yet right now, though, we're talking about white supremacists. And we condemn it. They won't go there. And a lot of people are calling them cowards. And I think, eh, I think coward is a generous sort of evaluation. I hope they're cowards. Because if they're not, what it really means is they have a little bit of affinity towards that thinking. That's the scarier. Is it cowardice or, eh, you know, you don't condemn your own. I mean, God love him. No one has ever accused him of going off the edge on these things. Senator Ted Cruz says, this is an act of terrorism that needs to be investigated. You've got people on both sides saying, and then you've got someone saying, literally they are saying the equivalent I could imagine. Could you imagine after 9-11, flight 93 is the one that went down in the field. They think, they don't know, but they think it was headed for the Capitol building. And some passengers on the plane got up and tried to retake the plane and brought it down in the middle of a field. Could you imagine if any of our church or state leaders had gotten up and said, well, on that one, the terrorists and the one who opposed them are equally to blame. Could you imagine? That's what that, when we get up and say, well, you know, we want to look at everything. No, no, it's time just to say, you know what? The kind of prejudice and bigotry we're seeing there is just flat wrong. It is in classical terms, a sin. And we as a church have to start praying with Peter that we will be called into the storm. Not that we get to, you know, I've said a million times, not that we get to be safe. I think most of us, what I've always loved about the vision I have of this gospel in my mind is Jesus is far enough away they don't know it's him. So he's out there somewhere. This altar, let's say, is the boat. And when Peter starts to step and falter, it says Jesus catches his hand, which means even as he falters, he's still willing to reach out. I have to tell you, I would love to think that that's me. But all I can feel in my body is the minute I sink, I would reach back for that boat. I would reach back for what's known and what's safe. Even though we're all in the boat afraid, you know, we would still reach back for familiar misery before trusting God to call us into the storm. It's the perfect gospel when you see, you know, our culture being sort of torn apart. And torn apart by people who are taking entire groups hostage emotionally. You know, I think I have a lot of friends who I would consider socially progressive, economically conservative. I think that's a lot of people in this country. And I keep thinking, you know, when groups like this take over the word conservative for all of America, that is like someone believing that Al-Qaeda is every Muslim. There are actually, you know, I mean, I quoted Senator Cruz, others, there are horrified conservatives throughout America today. And we can't let this get tagged right onto them. We can't let this get tagged onto a group. This is a small group of people, you know, I blanch every time I hear white Christian nation. Do you know who's not welcome in a white Christian nation? That Middle Eastern Jewish boy Jesus. You know, I always wonder what's the bigger miracle in our minds, in our minds, that he was born of a virgin or that that wonderful Jewish girl named Miriam gave birth to a white Aryan that's in all the artwork. Amazing how we can just flip things around and take what we want from them. And what we find out today is, no, no, you know what? Jesus came to save all people. Every person you encounter, every person struggling in America, every person of every faith and color that is struggling is a child, is beloved of God. Anyone who attacks one of us attacks all of us, even when it's our own people doing the attacking. You know, we have to become galvanized in the core of our faith, in the core of our faith that, you know, the Jesus who said, reach out to the marginalized. You know, that's really what widow and orphan is code for. The marginalized, those who had no access to the assets of a community. We reach out to everyone and we embrace everything except the hatred, except the terror. You know, terrorism is not something that always, that, you know, you can't measure it by the number of bodies that fall. Terrorism is there by the amount of fear it creates. That's why it's called terrorism, and this was an act of terrorism. This was an act of, how can we terrorize a town? And I think we are a people that say, no, that's not what Christianity is about. It's not what Catholicism is about. And again, not just politically, church-wise, our leaders have not spoken out. Our leaders have spoken, you know, spoken softly and you don't want, well, you don't want to offend the donors. I spent a lot of time last night thinking, I'd rather see the building project fail than have a community using the building that supports and embraces bigotry or prejudice. I'd rather, I'd rather join the Jews and... We will wander in the desert. It's been done before. Not with Irish skin, but it's been done before. We're going to be a people who just will not, who will not tolerate the hatred. It's the only thing we should just be intolerant about, you know, is the hatred. And when we become that people, we start to realize, the kingdom of God, you have two choices. We can either be a people that go after the storm, are invited in, we will take up the fight, we will become a people who will not be silent. I always think of Martin Luther King, you know, the generation will be judged not so much for the horrible deeds of the children of darkness, but for the awful silence of the children of good. The children of light can't be silent. And I think we have to join people in saying, the kingdom of God is for everyone.
