A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus summoned the 12 and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick, no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them. So they went off and preached repentance. The 12 drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. The Gospel of the Lord. As I've been mentioning since Advent this year, Mark's Gospel, most likely the earliest of the Gospels. There's always every generation or so someone tries to come up with another theory. But over the last several centuries, the idea is that Mark is the earliest Gospel simply because it's the shortest and simplest. And those of you who have stories in your family know that over generations, the stories that get told do not get simpler and shorter. Bigger and more elaborate stories bigger and more elaborate, and things get added to them. And that's what happens with the other Gospels is that they start to expand, and everyone starts putting in their two cents worth. Mark's is the proto-Gospel. It really is this early, and you get these very brief, not a lot of teachings, just boom, here's what happened. And we get this little instruction about going out, what it means to go out and preach the Gospel. And at first, we hear this rather dire, do not bring the walking stick, no food, no sack, no money in their belts. So you're not only not to bring food or money, but no sack, meaning you can't collect any of that along the way either. And it's very common for people and for spiritual directors to take that and say, this was so that they would be completely dependent on God. Every day that you're breathing, you're completely dependent on God. I don't think that was the point. I think it made them completely dependent on the communities they were going to. There is an antidote against arrogance when you're dependent upon the community you're going to preach to. You actually have to go in and build a relationship with these people before you start to say, now here's what I believe. If you just go in without the relationship, here's what I believe usually turns out to be, here's what you're doing wrong. And it's all the wrong kind of preaching. It's all the wrong kind of sharing of the gospel. Jesus says, I'm going to send you in and you are going to be utterly dependent upon them for hospitality. You're going to accept that hospitality. You're going to accept the gift of hospitality. You're going to have a relationship where something is at risk when you start to tell them what you believe. And I think without that risk, we end up as we have, I think really in modern times, we too often end up with Christianity from the cheap seats. What Christianity from the cheap seats look like is if my brother has a drinking problem and mistreats his family, I'm not going to say anything because it's really not my place and it will ruin Christmas. But if those people in Missouri pass a law we don't like as Christians, I'm going to sign some documents and yell about that. Why? Because I have no relationship with the people in Missouri at stake. It's tougher when you have to actually share your faith with the people in your life. And my hope would be that not only do you share your faith with the people in your life, but I really hope you share and listen with the people who disagree with you on almost everything. Most of us call those family. Siblings. You know, it was such an interesting to watch the dynamic right after the last elections when people would come and say, I'm not talking to my siblings anymore and I wanted to say, so what, for the last quarter of a century you had a delusion that you agreed on everything? No, but now we're disagreeing out loud. My delusions are gone. You know, as Christians we have got to get love of one another and agreeing with one another separated. I think as a country it's destroying us. We no longer know how to disagree without hating the other side. And I mean hating the other side. I keep wondering when conservatives and liberals in the church, conservatives and liberals in the country, when do we get tired of hating each other? When do we get tired of vilifying anyone who disagrees with us? Do we just get to a point where we realize both sides are, they're selling away their morals right and left because they've got to stick with the team even when either side's doing something horrible? You know, we've watched as terrible things have happened and people are kind of like, well, you know, it's gonna be, I can't disagree with it. Yes, you can. Because you can disagree with your side without hating anyone. You can disagree with the other side without hating people. People can disagree with you and they're not attacking you personally. Though right now sometimes they are because they don't know how to do one without the other. And so Jesus, for everything he says, take, don't take this, don't take this, don't take this, we miss the huge commandment, which is where he tells them the one thing they are to take. He sends them out two by two. They are to take a companion. And my hope is that he gave each one of them the companion that drives them crazy. Because most of us would think, well, you send them out two by two so they got each other's back and we're stronger in numbers. And no, you send people out two by two so that when one of them does something crazy, the other can go, I say this respectfully, but you're being an idiot. Sometimes you have to have those people in your life. I can't tell you, I know everyone here at least knows a couple if you're not that couple. The amazing number of married couples who have come to realize after years of marriage that God gave them someone in their life to do nothing but cancel out their vote. They are there to vote for the other side every time. And you know what? Those marriages last forever. I think the marriages that will struggle are when two people walk down the aisle really believing the delusion that they agree on everything. We think just alike. Oh my gosh, we have everything in common. One of two things is going on. Either you are fooling yourself and that marriage has a shelf life of about five years. Or they really do agree with you on everything. You've married a carbon copy of yourself and the ick factor is kind of pretty high on that. I went out and I found someone who's just me. Well, get a mirror, it's easier to maintain. Rather than Jesus gives us companions that companion is a Greek word to break bread with. In the Greek tradition, those, in the Hebrew tradition, the word is Greek but the tradition is Hebrew. Those who you sit at table with and you argue and you agree and you argue and you agree and you go back and you forth and you bring who you really are into that relationship. And when you disagree, there's a real relationship at risk. If you're going to voice your Christianity, it's not to strangers across the state or across the city. When do we voice it to, I don't know, the people in our family or someone at work or even a boss or someone who really has power over me. That was the role of the prophet, to speak truth to the king. Not the king of some other country, the king who could affect your life or your boss or your spouse. For some of you, that is your boss, you know. It's whatever it is. Do we speak our truth to the people in our life with whom we have a relationship rather than, well, I speak it all the time on Twitter and Facebook. Those are the best friends. I love those friends because they turn off with a key. Which means they're not real. I always have to shock people of a certain generation when you have to actually tell them the word virtual means not real. That's what the word means. They're virtual friends. That means not real. Which is good because friends, and I wanna be delicate about this, friends are a huge inconvenience in life. So much better than being alone. But if you're not inconvenient once in a while, you probably aren't being a friend. You know, their rhythm is different than yours and sometimes they need you to be there when you're not feeling up to it and back and forth and you depend on each other and you struggle with one another. And someone who never, ever inconveniences you, that's not a friend, that's an accessory, you know. And so we should always get a little in each other's way. We should always be voicing different opinions. It's always, especially in these last couple years, it's been my prayer for our church and for our country that liberals and conservatives learn the deeper truth, which is put yourself in whichever camp you like, blue, red, liberal, conservative, traditional, progressive, give yourself whatever term you like. Then see all the people on the other side of the fence, the ones, we don't say this in church, but the ones you've been learning to hate for the last couple years. And see all of them and know that those are the people that keep you from ruining the world. Because if everyone was liberal or everyone was conservative, it would ruin things. We would either be a world incapable of change or a world changing so fast that we had no identity. We need that tension, which means if you're liberal or conservative, it's the other person that keeps you from destroying things. And you're not liberal or conservative because you're smarter than that other side. We're just the smarter ones. We're the nicer ones. We're the ones that are closer to God. Both sides say all that. It's kind of ridiculous, but both sides say that. No, it's because that's your personality. Either you love change or you hate change and it's gonna make you one or the other. Either you want to see the world changing or you want tradition to stay the same. It's your personality. And the people on the other side of the fence, they're here in the world and know what that means? That means you can live your personality and know that there are people in the world who will balance you. As I said, many of you married those people. And it makes for a strong relationship. Jesus sends us out with companions. And that means the church should companion with other churches. It means countries should companion with other countries. We should companion across ideologies because we need someone to help us to see something from somewhere beyond our own point of view. I have long since, I think it's the weakness. I'm not asking the church to throw it out or anything, but the weakness of celibacy is that priests do not always have those people in their life that they have to listen to. Sometimes we go through life thinking we don't have to listen to anyone. I mean, I still believe that the reason priests have to wear a black shirt and black pants and a black suit is because somewhere along the line, they realized there was no wife at the front door to stop them and go, oh no, try again. And without that, we go, just go basic black, you'll be fine. But it's important to have people in your life. Who are the people in your life that you disagree with and have remained close? Without them, you don't have companions. You have reflections of yourself. Our spiritual life, you hear people say a lot, I'm spiritual but not religious. And what they really mean is sometimes they just mean that they're upset with whatever church they went to. But more often, what they mean is my spirituality is a very private, personal thing that I'm not gonna get out and debate with people. Our spirituality should not be a personal, private thing because our spirituality is moving us towards, we say heaven, some say Brahma, some say paradise. It's moving us towards complete union with God and others. That is not prepared for in isolation. We cannot prepare for unity on an isolated path. Our spirituality should be in constant dialogue with others. It should be the part of ourself we share most often. I think it's interesting that 30 years ago, people said, oh, well, you do not talk about sex, politics, or religion. Now, all we can talk about are the first two. But we never really get to religion. We get to political end of it, or the lifestyle end of it, or the rules. We don't really get to someone asking, so how do you come to faith? How do you know when you pray, is that God or just your own voice in your head? We don't discuss those things. We take the Bible and we do what people do like with this earlier reading, the first reading today. We take the Bible and we make it into a series of bumper stickers that we can pull one out when we need it to back our other views. You know, that happened. And I don't mean to pick on him because he's one of a million people that did it, but I think it was, was it Jeff Sessions got into trouble this week for saying, well, you know, the Bible says, don't ever start that way. Because you're picking out your favorite line. The Bible says, you must be obedient to the authorities. Well, yeah, but our first reading today says, you must speak truth to the authorities and challenge them. And of course, the joke about that that's been going around the religious community is, Paul did say, you must respect the civil authorities. He said that from prison. Why was he in prison? The civil authorities told him to shut up and he wouldn't. So, you know, you gotta kind of know the whole story. You know, the Bible is not a place where we go for our favorite, oh, that's my favorite quote. It backs me up. We go to the Bible and we read it as a whole and we get a sense of what we're called to do in the world. But today we're told by Jesus, don't go it alone. If you go it alone, it will become quirky. It will become your own. God will be an image of yourself. You've got to be in dialogue with others. If I disagree with scripture, I can put it down. If I disagree with the internet, I can turn it off. If I disagree with a friend who is face-to-face, I'm gonna have to deal with another person in the world. That's companionship. Anything less is not religion. Anything less is really not even spirituality. When it's just me, myself, and I don't bring others into it, I have fallen into simple reflection. God says to us today, reflection will not get you where we want you to go. Spirituality is in dialogue. That will take us to real faith.
