A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. Whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe. In my name, they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages, they will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven. He took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Ascension is one of the kind of, I think, sort of misunderstood holidays, feast days in the church, because I think we get so caught up in this event where Jesus has to go away so the Spirit can come, which always sounds like a little bit of a control issue that only one-third of the Trinity can be out of heaven at one time. We're not quite sure why or why that's in there, but we forget that it really does make sense, and these have been the readings all week long, that as long as Jesus is in the flesh, walking and talking with people, no one's gonna take the time to deal with the Spirit. I mean, if any one of you had an option between a half an hour of prayer or a one-on-one with Jesus to get some questions answered, I know what we'd all pick, because we think, I can pray any time, but I want some questions answered. And while Jesus is on earth, that's what he can do. That's what he can do for a small sliver of people while the rest of the world gets nothing. Or move out of that and have everyone kind of deal with the messiness of the Spirit. You know, so while all of us would definitely say that Jesus in the flesh would be a much easier user interface, it's also not set up for everyone. Only a few people. One of the things about being human is you can have really, really good friends, but no one here can be really good friends to everyone on earth. You know, there just isn't time. So we move into this more universal time that's coming next week at Pentecost, and we get this moment where Jesus is, you know, ascended. Now, this is one of those places where do not get too literal with the Scripture. You know, I mean, there's all these pictures of people standing around, and Jesus went that way. And then you kind of wonder what time of day it was and which direction in the universe he shot out at. Because back then, they believed the earth was flat and up was heaven. Now, we know that no longer works, but it's amazing how many people will still think of heaven as that way, even though science knows that I just pointed a very different direction than I did a few minutes ago because the earth has changed angles. We have more info now on some things, but we still like those old images of heaven being up and hell being down. And I like that image because, you know, there's a lot more of that, and, you know, the center of the earth has limited. You know, so it's not a bad image. But what we have to get to is that sense of what it means that Jesus is lifted up to something new because the entire Jesus event, this sort of descent down from heaven and ascent back up, descent exists for one reason, solidarity. Solidarity with those who have less and then ascension to bring them back up with you. So the ascension is the beginning of humanity's ascension. And the ascension continues to this day, and the ascension will not be finished fully until every last member of the body of Christ has ascended. We kind of not, I think we forget that this image of the body of Christ is not just literary. We believe that when one of us suffers, the body of Christ is still in the passion. And when one of us passes away, the body of Christ is still in crucifixion mode. And the body of Christ is still in the tomb. And the body of Christ is still ascending. So we get those prayers that talk about kind of in these anatomical terms where the head has gone, the body is following, is hoping to follow. So the ascension is an era we live in. It's not just a historical event. It's the era we live in. And it's something we're called to participate in. And the work of our Christianity is the same thing. Sometimes we have to go through the sacrificial downgrading for the sake of solidarity with others. That's fasting during Lent, things like that. Experiencing what it is to have less so that we can form solidarity with others. But for the purpose of this, to lift people up. And I think it's, this is why the theme actually works well for Mother's Day. What it means to sacrifice big chunks of your life to lift others up. And, you know, most mothers will tell you, at least while their children are in the room, that it's not a huge sacrifice. You know. And in a sense, giving our lives to others is never, it's not, it doesn't have to be a miserable, painful sacrifice. But of course it's a sacrifice. People always say to me, you know, the assumption is always that, oh, you know, do you just love being a priest? And I'm like, what day is it and what time? Does anyone love their work when the alarm goes off in the morning? You know. So there are times that to commit to something regularly is going to have a little bit of an emotional sacrifice to it. Because, you know, including the I do's made at marriage, those, if you think those I do's are going to set your emotional clock for the next 50 years, talk to me in five. You cannot, no one, you know, that's why we always have to be careful when people say, you know, they're coming together to make vows. And they're thinking, well, I'm going to, you know, I'm making this promise to love a person. And they're thinking, I'm making a promise to have a certain emotion for the rest of my life. No one can promise what their emotions will be in five minutes, much less in 10 years. It's not a commitment of emotion. It's a commitment beyond emotion. And I would actually argue that in most situations, people do not have a chance to fall in love until they get beyond the kind of crazy romance stage. Because, you know, being in love is all about how you treat someone when you don't feel it. On a bad day, you're not feeling well. How you treat people on your worst day is usually a measure of love. Everything else is just, you know, it's icing on the cake, and it's fun, and, you know, the romance and all, that's all perks. But how we treat one another when we're not feeling it. It's probably kind of the most, not discouraging, but I kind of sigh at the foibles of humanity when I hear, one of the most constant things you'll hear in a confession when someone is talking about something they've done that they did bad, but they're like, but, you know, I was really angry. Yeah, you know, that may mitigate things legally. It wouldn't mitigate sin. You know, the rage defense. You know, I struck out and I hit someone. Well, no one thinks you had eight hours of sleep, woke up in a good mood, and just decided to smack someone. Of course you were in a bad mood. You know, self-control is about how we behave when we're not feeling well. Usually, when we're feeling great, we behave pretty well. It's when the energy's here. You know, I always think that the motherhood we honor, like Mother's Day cards, you know, flowers, or something that looks like Christmas, you know, the mother with the quiet baby, that's not motherhood. You know, motherhood is 10 o'clock at night and they will not stop talking. That's motherhood. Those are the times that you have to go, okay, I have to take a deep breath and be who I am, regardless of who they're being. You know, it takes parents very, very little time to realize that children are not born with reason. So they are not reason-able. You know, so all of a sudden you're like, okay, I have to flow with this. I always think, you know, it's always interesting to watch the reactions when we have children making noise in church. You get about three big reactions. One is, what is wrong with those parents? That's the reaction that led entire generations to leave church. Because, you know, that was when we threw out the welcome mat that said, we want your children here, we just want them to really be 40-year-olds in children's bodies. We want them to behave like adults, but we want them here. Could you imagine doing that to anyone else? We want minorities here, we want them to behave white. That's what you're saying when you say, we want children here, but we want them to behave like adults. And then you get the other reaction, which is people will say after church, I've never seen a parish that has so many children. And I actually, I take the compliment, I don't want them to know that we have the same number, they're just louder. I think we're a very young parish. I always have the third reaction, which is, celibacy's not so bad. That's a less common reaction. I'm going to sleep at 10 tonight, how about you? But we have this sense of what that means that people, you know, they do that and they want to lift their children up. I probably say this every year at Ascension, but I think we do not really grasp yet that where he could have, the choice is, God has no power over anyone. That's what the Jesus was, was. He came to say, I don't want power over people, I want power under them. I want power that lifts. Power over anyone is power that keeps down. All you have to do is do the physics. Power from above pushes people down. Power under lifts people up. And when we are, you know, out in the world trying to be Christian, we are to exercise power under others. Power that lifts people up. It can be exhausting. It does take good boundaries. Pastors know that. You know, I get all sorts of requests and, you know, I'm looking at, you know, as it's getting closer that Father Peter's leaving and I will be the only priest here. And there's, you know, we're getting up towards 3,000 families. And there are people who will be like, this is what I want done and I want Father Pat to do it. And I have to say, oh, you know. You know, there are people who would say, I know it's not what you usually do, but you're the only one I trust for this heart surgery. And I have to say, oh, no. I don't care how much you trust me. I'm not picking up a scalpel. You know, it happens more often with like, I want marriage counseling. Well, you know, it's not my training. Yeah, but we trust you more. You know, either I'm going to say, no, we have to have boundaries, or I'm going to throw in advice on child rearing. You know, you have to tell people that, no, no, here's who does that. But the willingness to give of ourselves has to be there, you know. And not to a point where someone says, this is what I want and I'm entitled to it, because we don't want to nurture that in others. I've probably told the story that, you know, when I was, oh gosh, first ordained, I was maybe a priest a year, that a woman had come into my office and she wanted me to follow her husband around to see if he was being faithful. Now, I was new, but I was pretty sure that was not in my job description. And I said to her, oh, you know, we can't do that. That really is not what we do. We got married in the church. It is your job to help defend this marriage. And I kept trying to explain, and she just got more irate and more irate. And this little voice in the back of my head kept saying, I wouldn't say it, but I just wanted to go, look, let's cut to the chase. I've known you for 10 minutes. He's not being faithful. But... That... That would be an unpastoral response. You know, sometimes, and I think sometimes we will go to that place of sniping at one another because we're so uncomfortable going, I don't do that, and holding our own. A friend of mine said it was a very freeing thing the first time he learned to say to his friends, I'm sorry, I've got plans tonight. Instead of, he said, you know, I was like 40 years old, and I would still, I'm lying. I'm saying to people, you know, I've got this thing with my family. Rather than, I've got plans tonight. And it might be plans just to be alone. I've just got plans. And someone wants to go out, you can say, I've got plans, and you don't need to give them more explanation than that. But you have to be confident enough to state the truth. To say, oh no, I've got plans tonight. And not feel like you owe them more. The minute you keep feeling like you owe them more, then it's just waiting for you to boil over and something snarky comes out. The way we raise one another up is to help when we can, and know the boundaries when we can't. But to know that our goal is to lift others up, and most of that, it doesn't take sacrifice so much as charity. And the difference is, you know, that's just when someone comes to you and says, oh, I just made this mistake. It really doesn't take more energy to give a gracious response. It doesn't take more energy not to kick people when they're down. It doesn't really take more energy. It just takes a better sense of who we're called to be. And so, you know, on this Mother's Day, when we have the example of mothers around us, we recommit to the ascension, to knowing that we are here to exercise God's power under others. We're not here to use our faith to knock people down and tell you who's wrong, and that person's going to hell, and power over, power over, we have the power. No, we're here to be power under. And I think we should start actively looking in our lives, in our families, in our groups of friends, in the people we encounter, who can we lift up, how? What are the simple ways that someone leaves our immediate orbit feeling better about themselves rather than worse? It was interesting, someone was very, they actually called, I always think it's funny when someone will call a school they've never met anyone at because they don't like what's on the sign. Not that we live in an entitled culture, but I don't like your sign, change it. Because we had put out there, because it's one of those things people say to keep people trying hard and in line more than just to give a compliment. And what I had said from the pulpit is, you know, even with kids sometimes, that's not bad. That's not bad is the most ungenerous version of that's good. You know, well that's not bad. It's kind of like, what are you afraid of giving away there? A little too much of the heart? A little too much of the compliment? I want them to know that I don't think it's bad, but I don't want them walking off feeling good about themselves. Why not go the more generous response? That doesn't even take any more energy. Just a readjustment of what we're hoping to do. And sometimes it's, oh, I'm always trying to challenge people. I'm always trying to make them better. Do you ever recognize how good they are? And I think we are called to lift people up. You know, we don't always have to be, I'm going to make sure that they get this under control. Second, lift them up. Lift them up. I am certain that no one gets to the gates of heaven and hears the words, I'm sorry you weren't hard enough on people. Because if the hard enough group are actually the ones behind the gate, I will tell you, run for hell as fast as you can. We know it doesn't make sense. We know the people, we expect that unconditional love in heaven. Are we willing to be that? To lift one another up. Not just to look at the ascension as a beautifully historical moment that, you know, is deserving of stained glass somewhere. But to be part of it. To continue to lift people up to heaven. To exercise power under.
