A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning while it was still dark and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved and told them, they have taken the Lord from the tomb and we don't know where they've put him. So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first. He bent down and saw the burial claws there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial claws there and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial claws but rolled up in a separate place. The other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed, for they did not yet understand the scripture, that he had to rise from the dead. The Gospel of the Lord. I sometimes think that today's gospel points us to the absolute need once in a while to be wide-eyed and incredibly sort of naive and unsophisticated. I think the enemy of hope in modern culture is sophistication. We try to, you know, because sophistication in our culture means, you know, I've kind of seen it all and nothing catches me off guard. As though our deep down we know that when we get to heaven, we'll go, pretty much what I thought. The robes could be nicer. We're just that sophisticated. I've told you over the years, I had some friends years ago who used to, they would go to the theater and they knew everything, they knew every line, they knew, I mean, they would have told you they were the most sophisticated theater people in the world and they would always say, their line was always, well, you know, how was it? We're a tough room. It was good, but this, and well, this, but, and this. They were so sophisticated that they had not enjoyed an evening of theater in 20 years. That's sophistication. When you can go into any situation and go, you know, that could have been better. Because we're almost worried. This is, we see them really grappling with, you know, Mary Magdalene arrives at the tomb and he's not there. First thought goes through her head is, something worse has happened. You know, think of the culture there. They've desecrated the body, the body's gone. She runs and gets help. Peter comes in, they can't figure out what's going on because good news was the furthest thing from their mind. And I think most of us probably weighed into a lot of life with good news being the furthest thing from our mind. I can't tell you how many times I heard in school and growing up over the years that, well, if it seems too good to be true, that would have been a very interesting end to today's story. Peter said, too good to be true. You know, at the core of our faith is, sometimes too good to be true is true. And that is really difficult for us to believe because I think we believe that if we get too lost in that, we'll no longer have the skills to grapple with real despair, real suffering, the real facing of death, the things that we all do still have to do because we don't understand that that eventual hope actually makes it easier. Sometimes we feel that, oh, you know, if I hope too much and then it doesn't happen, I'll be crushed. I think the only time we're crushed is when we decide to stop hoping. You know, so you get into a relationship and you get hurt. Go into another. You know, no, no, I got hurt. I'm going to stay alone and eat a can of worms. I mean, you know, it made sense when I was eight. You know, I'm just gonna hold my breath. We sometimes just, like good news is just beyond our grasp and bad news, oh yeah, we get that. And I've noticed that there are people who kind of, they're kind of schtick. The way they are sophisticated, the way they handle things in the world is they're always kind of complaining. Well, you know, it's an awful day, but you know, maybe tomorrow will be better. Well, you know, maybe the Lord will just take me. Well, maybe that, you know, it just, it's not really even a sophistication. It's a sort of, I'm not gonna be disappointed. I'm not gonna be disappointed because I am never gonna hope for anything in the first place. And in the center of our church here is this moment that says, hope in the ridiculous. You know, all religions at their core have some teaching that logically is ridiculous. Otherwise we'd call it science. It's religion because you have to choose to believe it. It's not, you know, people, whenever someone says, oh, you can't really watch that story and read that, you can't do that and not believe. Yes, you can. It's exceedingly easy. People do it all the time. People have to make a choice to believe. I've always contended, especially when I'm teaching a beginning theology class, there are three kinds of statements in the world. There's rational, irrational, and non-rational. And rational is two plus two equals four. I don't care what language you use. If you use this and this and you tell them it's gonna be that, the mind will catch that and say that makes sense. If you try to teach two plus two is five, it will not work and they can't build a system on it and the human mind will not grab it. But then you have these non-rational statements. Religion, we come along and we say two plus two is good. Can't prove it, can't disprove it. You either choose to believe it or you don't. And that's our faith. Faith always has a choice. And I think there are people that whenever someone tells you, oh no, if you pray, this will happen, you will be converted, they're trying to make it into science because science feels safer. It's safer, but it doesn't carry the hope. And so hope is a choice. And it's a choice that we celebrate in this season. We have all these images of spring and one of my brothers is over at the house preparing some food and I just realized what he's going to see when he gets there. Yesterday, there's a couple in the parish, wonderful people, and I think these kits, people have had them for years. Every year they bring me a lamb cake that's shaped like the lamb laying on its side with the head on the top. And it's in the green coconut grass and then they just put a ton of candy around it because my doctor said I'm getting too thin. So there's this pile of candy and the lamb and every year they bring it and little licorice eyes and every year. And so yesterday, the doorbell rings and I think, oh, I know that's Karen and Ken. So we go, and we're talking while I'm holding the cake and as we're talking, the little lamb's face plants into the chocolate. Falls off, which I mean, I know many of you did the same thing this morning, so let's be fair to the lamb. But it's now face down in the chocolate. And so I get to the house and I'm like, I'm not even gonna try and put this back together. So I put the little lamb's head on a plate and put it in the refrigerator. His eyes looking right. So if you hear some screams from across the street, he thought he was coming over for Easter and he got the Godfather. But at any rate, we've got all these symbols of new life that it's kind of okay to say, you know what? Grab onto it, be hopeful, and if you're disappointed, you can survive disappointment. The gospel just tries to tell us so many times, we can survive disappointment. I think the reason Peter is put in charge is because he is not a perfect character. He just survives disappointment and he never stops trying. He sinks when he tries to walk on the water. He was the only one that tried to walk on the water. Oh, he denied Jesus three times. Only one we get a story because he kept following him right into the courtyard of danger. He tried harder than anyone and then he failed harder than anyone and that is someone who stays hopeful. That's someone who can withstand the power of hope. And so, you know, as we go for 50 days of Easter, only 40 days of Lent, we get 50 days of Easter. I hope we don't fall into what kind of becomes the Catholic pattern. For 40 days, I gave up chocolate, I gave up this, I gave up that, and then I failed three times, I felt guilty about it, I had a good Lent. I gave up, so what about Easter? So what do you do for 50 days of Easter now? I think we're having ham in the afternoon. You know, we almost feel that if we really went out and celebrated for 50 days, that there'd be something terribly un-Christian and unholy about that. You know, we've got holiness confused with a sort of sanctified, low-level depression that we're supposed to live life with. And you know, a holy person walks through life like this. You know, that sort of stained glass imagery that holy people aren't joyful. Well, joyful, but not too joyful. The Benedictine monastery I studied at, and I am not knocking them, that was an amazing experience and they're great people, but I always used to, I would start laughing during the Easter vigil, I know, even back then. Because they would get to the Alleluia and they were so excited because they were gonna do this original Alleluia chant from the 8th century, and they'd just get so excited about it, and it was one of these big pieces, and it was a chant. And so, you know, it's Easter, and all of a sudden it would start and some monk, you'd hear him in the distance. Alleluia. And I thought, can you imagine, he's risen, Alleluia. It was the most somber, and I brought it up to the abbot one day and I said, but it's just so, I don't understand, it just doesn't seem to, it's quietly joyful. Oh, is that what it is? I think Xanax can fix quietly joyful. It's all right for us to embrace life and say, you know, we're good at Lent. What if for Easter we give up guilt? Oh, no, oh Father, no. It's the only thing that keeps me religious. What if we give it up? What if we actually say, so where's this life that we're embracing? What if we start to prepare for heaven? What if we start to prepare for life well lived? What if heaven is not the place? What if it's the formation we go through? To learn, to look around and say, you know, life has got bad stuff happening, but there's good moments in between, and we're not tuned into those because we're replaying yesterday's bad or already worrying about tomorrow's. It's all there, and we focus on one or the other. I never tire of reminding people that physiological psychology will guarantee you that even within a year, you will remember less than 1% of 1% of the previous year. You already have forgotten yesterday's lunch. You might come up with what you ate, but you do not know how many bites you took. You can't really replay the whole experience. Most of it's gone. So what if you hung on to a different 1% of 1%? Then your whole history is now different. What do you focus on? And we look back and we say, well, you know, my life shaped me. Yeah, but who's choosing which memories? Who's really in charge of my history? I think we have to become a people with resurrected eyes. We have to see the world through that kind of hope. We know. We know that there will be death eventually before resurrection. I had a prophetic vision, and everyone in here within 100 years will die. Three of you today, I can't say who. But they're all seated over here. We don't know. But we do believe that the end game is God. The end game is love. And so we have to go through life starting to go, this is hard, this is easy, this is difficult, this is joyful. Which of those will I pull into tomorrow? Because someone will say, well, you can't just ignore the others, but you'd be amazed how often we get to tomorrow and have ignored what's good that happened. Has any of you ever had a teenager come home and say, you know, it was an awful day, but this one good thing happened that I can't get past? That would be someone who knew the resurrection at an early age. What if we think and pray and use our time to refocus our vision on the goodness and the hope of life? It will not keep us from fixing the problems. It will actually give us the energy to face them. As Christians, we don't face the cross because there's a great holiness in suffering. We face the cross because we know that resurrection is bigger than the cross. Easter is longer than Lent.
