A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go then to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place which the Lord has made known to us. So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph and the infant lying in a manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about the child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Gospel kind of points us towards the difference between blessings and burdens. And it's amazing, they're always the same thing. It just has to do with perspective. I mean, I didn't get a single Christmas card with the words across the top, another mouth to feed. That would be a burden. Instead, we see a blessing. And almost every real burden in our life that comes from other people, and people need time, and there are people who need help, and that can be socioeconomic help, that can be help in our families, that can be the family member that always seems to need help. And we can turn our mind so that that becomes burden. Very easily. Or we can understand that the people who call forth things from us are really the only meaning we have in life. I mean, children, if you want to go there, you could say, aren't children a burden? Sorry, choir. Wah, wah. You know. But what else makes life worth it? I mean, what is it that people get in the way of? Another rerun of Judge Judy. What is it that people get in the way of? And tonight we celebrate this moment, and I've been so caught up, this year has been a lot of my friends, you know, I'm at the age, you know, I went through the period of time where friends were getting married and friends were having children, and now all of my friends are having their first grandchildren. And where I knew that when they had children it would change their lives radically, I did not realize that grandchildren would be a game changer for so many people. It's a game changer. I've seen people move across the country to be with grandchildren. And you wonder what that is, and it's this sense that what we've done has gone on into the world. Who we are does not pass away. And I had all of these deep, heady, notably brilliant theological reflections ready for tonight. And then, as rarely, rarely happens, I woke up at four in the morning, and I thought, oh, I can't get back to bed and I've got midnight mass. Now the minute you tell yourself that, you are never, ever going back to sleep. We all know that. And I had this, real quick, there was this melody and lyric in my mind that I had seen the snow falling just before I went to bed, and so I started this little thing. I thought, I'm just gonna go write the four measures down and then I will come back to bed. And an hour and a half later, I had a song. And it was just pouring in. I don't think I've ever really had a song come that quickly. And the homily went out the window, and what I'm going to do, and what I'm going to do, I'm gonna move to the piano, and this is gonna be a much shorter homily because songs reel me in as well as let me express myself. But this is a song, and it really is about that moment when I'm looking at the snow and I'm thinking, we don't know how much there'll be tomorrow, but what is it about snow we love? And I can't, it has nothing to do with Christmas. I mean, I don't want to ruin anyone's Christmas, but there wasn't a lot of snow in Jerusalem in the spring. And yet, it's part of our cultural thought of Christmas, and I think the reason is there's something, I mean, it's beautiful to look at, but if we stop to think about it, we need rain. And when rain comes down and hits something a little less hospitable, like cold, it can turn into something amazing and beautiful, which is the Christ story. God who comes down and actually finds something less hospitable, and it becomes even more beautiful. And so, you know, this mystery of the child and the snow was kind of going through my head, and so I'm just going to leave you with this. This is my gift this year, mostly for our children. So this is, since they're giving us all this music, this is a gift for the children that I'm hoping in future years we can do with some of the choirs. So just let me make sure that I'm on the new mic here. Is this on? Oh.
