Lest are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, lest are those servants. Peter said, Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone? And the Lord replied, who is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time? Lest is the servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so. The gospel of the Lord. Blessed be Jesus Christ. The longer form of today's gospel, we have a choice. The longer form goes into towards the end, who will get beaten and who will get beaten a little less. It's a dark gospel. But it starts talking about, you know, those who think that the master is still a long way off, which I mean, most of us do. And I don't mean that in the sense that we don't feel close to God. But I think at this point in history, it psychologically would be unsound for us to really be thinking, you know, this is it. Jesus is coming back Wednesday. Doesn't happen. Friday, absolutely for well, but weekend for sure. You can't live life that way. And you know, they expected Jesus to come back and that's the master's return that they're talking about. They expected that to happen before the last of the apostles died. So we've missed the deadline just slightly. You know, it's been a while. And so after a while, we're like, okay, some of this we didn't get right back at the early church. And clearly the church is going to have a long life. And we don't know when the end of the world will come. And every 100 years or so, you know, something in history happens and we're sure this is it. And each time feels like this one's really, really it. But this idea is Christianity isn't something you should try to, you shouldn't try to get your life together because Jesus is coming at the end of the week. You should try to become a better person, to be a better person so that it doesn't matter whether he comes Wednesday or next Wednesday. I don't know why I think it's going to be a Wednesday, but I seem to be leaning on that lately. You know, hump day. It's just, God, you just know. If there's ever a day of the week that feels like the world could end, it's Wednesday. So, you know, you've got this sense that what he's trying to do is get them away from, I, you know, how do I make sure I pass the test? It is just, it's the difference between students that need to pass tests and students that want to learn. Two very different goals, you know? I mean, people who, so they're, you know, pedagogical people who say they're not, they've just got to get them through the test. They've got to learn the test. They've got to get the test. They've got to get the score. But what are they learning? I think we're starting to figure that out as we have a society of more and more and more and more people. It's astounding. I can't remember the number, but a high percentage of people who have four-year degrees, master's degrees, doctorate degrees that they do not use in their life. They ended up doing something else. You know, so it's not about passing tests. It's about learning. And Christianity is not about getting past the final judgment. God is not supposed to be the last obstacle to heaven. Gotta get past that final judgment. It's about becoming better people. It's becoming the people that make sense in heaven. I say that all the time, and I don't, I just think that that would reframe how we look at our Christian life. And so the fascinating thing about the steward, I think we forget, you know, this is not a parable about, you know, the head of household, it's the steward that Jesus is interested in. We are stewards of creation. We are stewards of God's grace. The church is the steward of the sacraments. And it is the steward's job to distribute, period. Now, if there's a limited amount of food, then it becomes the steward's job to distribute in such a way that there's enough for everyone. So what does it mean to be stewards of grace, stewards of sacraments, stewards of, you know, of our faith? Because being the steward of something that is unlimited is a different job. The only way to squander the grace of God is to hoard it, is to not share it, is to hold it back. We can't just let everyone in the church, I mean, what if we run out of grace? What if we run out of Jesus? No, I mean, God is infinite, and we think our job is to limit who has access to God. And so we have this, you know, and part of it is it's always an ego thing. It's not really, people have co-opted, you know, the liberal conservative argument for really authoritarianism. You know, if I can get back to the, if I can get back to the 1950s, no one questioned Father. It's not just about style areas, it's about, you can't question me. And I personally can't live in a world where people don't know enough to question Pat Dolan. I have a friend who always accuses me of not having, he says, you don't really have a filter, do you? And I never know whether I should be honest enough to scare him and say, this is filtered. You don't wanna know. But that idea that we're so busy presenting ourselves a certain way, that, you know, we want to use our faith to create status, in that opening prayer, there is one of those perfect examples of what it means to take an image out of its cultural context. And not only do you lose all the richness that it's trying to get to, you end up with something that's a very dicey cultural image. And it says, you know, oh God, creator of all things, whom through the Holy Spirit we dare to call Father. And nowadays, that's a gender term. That the Spirit taught us that God was male. No, we've lost the entire cultural meaning of a father. All we've hung on to is the Y chromosome. That's all we've hung on to. We don't understand a culture where your only possible connection to the society, to the community, is through the male parent. That's why we were to take care of widows and orphans. Because not only did they need help to take care of themselves, they weren't allowed to take care of themselves. It's not just, it's like, well, they don't have the skills to make a living. No, they're not allowed to make a living. They're not allowed to, you know, have access. I was talking to someone who was talking about immigration. He said, well, you know, I immigrated. And he said, but you know, but I did it right. And I had to correct him. I said, you mean you were allowed to do it right? There's a difference. Not everyone's allowed. Some are allowed. You know, women were not allowed to work. Martha and Mary, Jesus brings back Lazarus because it's their only chance to keep property or do anything. They can't inherit the property. They can't do anything because Lazarus is gone. And so, you know, so we have this image that says the Holy Spirit teaches us that God is the only person who can truly connect us to community, who can truly make us part of a group, who can truly make us, and we go, I got it, he's male. No, let's go back to that culture again. He's the only one that can connect us to the community. I've got it, Y chromosome. No, you know, but God is larger than gender. God is larger than ethnicity. God is larger than all of that. But different cultures have different images that they use, and even though that image comes out of a kind of what we would call a very impoverished social order, we lose the richness of the image when we just cut and paste it into modern culture. And so we have a movement now of young people, not just in our church, but in other churches, I honestly don't know what their vision is. We're going to make Christianity masculine again. Okay, when we get done with that, can we make geometry feminine? Religions don't have gender. We do know that, don't we? I suspect what they mean is, I want it to be something where, as a representative of it, I will look more masculine. I think they want to brand it. They would like to recast the Chosen with Steven Seagal as Jesus. You know, suffer the little children to come unto me. I mean. You know, they've got a whooped sense of masculine, and they want to thrust that onto the church. You know, they want, you know, none of this charity and joy in helping people anymore. I'm like, how do you read the gospel and even start to come away with that? When Jesus is like, okay, we are here to help the poorest of the poor. We are here to reach out to the weakest. We are here to really, to want to alleviate any suffering we encounter in the world. Father John Fullenbocket, and he had a couple of students that raised eyebrows on this from many different countries. We were in class at Rome. People from literally 42 countries, the Gregorian used to post. And he said, you know, I wonder if we'll ever evolve to the point where when our heart aches as we think of Jesus suffering on the cross, we stop making it about it being Jesus and the fact that someone is suffering. It's the suffering and anyone suffering on the cross it should, it should pull at us. That's why I always love to tell people how, what would it be like? Could a mother really be in heaven and experience heaven if her children weren't there? Now, when I mentioned that to someone, they said, oh, well, you know, there's a theology. I can't remember who said this, which is crazy because I just was, my head was blowing up. There's actually a theology in the church. We've always worried about that line. A theology in the church, meaning someone told me growing up and they were Catholic that when we get to heaven, God takes all memory from us of anyone that isn't there. That's creepy. Yes, the love of my life is in hell, but I won't remember her so it's okay. Stepford much? I mean, it's just in my, oh, that is no, no. God will help us to forget the suffering. Well, if God wants us to forget the suffering, then this remembering the suffering that we've been commanded to do seems bad training. We have to start to see this larger picture. We are called to be a people who go out and alleviate suffering. It's not Christianity's job to make me feel masculine or to make someone feel feminine. It's not Christianity's job to make me feel better looking. It has not worked. All of these things, that's not Christianity's job. We are given a job as Christians to go out and make the world a better place, to make it safer and nurturing for more people. And somehow that is not enough for people. And Jesus says, you're stewards of something that's infinite. We don't have to hold back a reserve. It's not like, well, we don't want to love too many people right now because the holidays are coming and the family's visiting. I'm bringing all the love I can get. No, no, you don't run out of those things. The things that we are called to be stewards of, there's so much of. You know, I always say it's the most un-capitalism thing in the world, but I was always taught that supply and demand, most, you know, why are diamonds worth more than rocks? Because they're rare. Problem with that, with Christianity is God's grace and love are the most common and abundant thing in the world and the most priceless. And we have to deal with that in our mind that's been trained to think that rarity makes something valuable. That God's love and grace is so available to us. And all we can do if we want to experience it more is to share it with others. We often get into a sense, and it can be an important thing in spirituality to take time to feel loved by God. But the original phrase is to feel the love of God meant to feel what it is to love the way God loves. You know, if someone says, you know, I would love to sing like Pavarotti, that's what we're supposed to think of. We say we would love to experience God's love. You know, we actually are trying to be the subject of that verb. Now it's about the geekiest thing I've said in a week, but you know, no, I said worse, nevermind. But you know, we're the one that's extending God's love. Because God doesn't sit up there, even though I think a lot of people think that's what worship's about, is God is up there going, love me more, love me more. God wants to love us and he wants us to love one another. Because you know, it's impossible for you and I to improve God's life in any way. But we can help one another. So he gives us one another so that we can continue that. So we ask God to make us a people who recognize we are stewards of God's grace and love and mercy and compassion. And as stewards, we will never run out of those things. So our job is to distribute those things. Not to control them, not to withhold them, not to try and figure out who gets what. To absolutely offer freely to the world what, no matter how much we think we've done, was offered absolutely freely to us.
