He replied to him, \"'Friend, who has appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?' Then he said to the crowd, \"'Take care to guard against all greed, \"'for though one may be rich, \"'one's life does not consist of possessions.' Then he told them a parable. There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, \"'What shall I do, \"'for I do not have space to store my harvest?' Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. There is a, one of my favorite phrases in the world about kind of hypocrisy and things about being, being foisted on your own batard, they used to say. I experienced that very strongly at the beginning of mass yesterday. I got up to do the opening prayer, and I, my glasses were behind me, my reading glasses, and I thought, I don't need my reading glasses. And I, I got to that prayer, and the word unceasingly just wouldn't come into focus, and it wasn't, I was never gonna come up with that. And I stared from, and finally I just turned around, and I grabbed my glasses, and I put them on, and everyone started snickering, mean spirits. And so I just had to admit my defeat, that I need my reading glasses. And so I did the prayer, and as I sat down, I thought, oh, not only did I just do that, but in just 15 short seconds, I'm gonna have to listen to the lector and open the liturgy. Vanity of vanity. I half expected her to bow. You know, I, I just, it was, you know, some, and they say, oh, sometimes scripture speaks to this moment in time. I mean this exact moment in time. You know, the word vanity has such an interesting sort of history, because it starts out from the word vain, then it becomes vanity, and then the word vain changes to match vanity, and we have two meanings for the word vain. Originally, this vanity of vanities, back in that time, the vanity vainness was not, I'm very vain. Vainness really almost exclusively referred to chasing things in vain. Just, you know, when we do, when we're chasing all the wrong things pointlessly, vanity was just chasing the wrong things. And because the kind of things people chased were things like wealth, and power, and prestige, and anything that could lead to that, whether it's, you know, being good looking, or being talented, or being smart, whatever it is that would lead to sort of personal attention, vanity started to become someone who thinks a little too highly of themselves. And so now when we say, oh, someone's being vain, we usually mean they're being conceited, but the original was, man, they're chasing all the wrong things, and those two ideas are very connected, but we don't always see that connection. In the gospel, it becomes clear that that's why the church has put these two together. You know, to be vain, what is it we chase in life? What is it we think's important? You know, in the last two weeks, I, you know, I love that idea, and I've said it a couple times about, no one takes a U-Haul to the cemetery. And I was actually corrected this week. So I said, Father, you can absolutely do that. You need to let them know you can take a U-Haul to the cemetery. You just can't take it any further. That's where it stayed. You know, that somehow, you know, we should be spending our life, you know, what is this treasure God talks about? And in a very real sense, you are that treasure. It is building who we are with one another. It is building who we are with one another. The three things I always tell you, the only three things we take with us beyond the grave, our relationship with ourself, our relationship with God, our relationship with others. And so, you know, is it wrong for someone to have amassed riches to themselves? It depends on whether it gets in the way of building relationships with others. If that is the point of their life, and everything else takes a backseat, that's an issue. You know, we live in an era, and I do apologize for saying this maybe too often, but we do live in an era where building relationships has been replaced with networking. Networking is when I use all of you to gain this wealth stuff. Relationships is when I use every wealth I have to get to the relationships. It's just knowing which are the means and which are the ends. What is our goal in life? That relationship with God, that relationship with others, and relationship with ourself, which, you know, when I was young and started into studying psychology, I always thought, oh, what a bunch of, what a bunch of nonsensical claptrap. I have to have a better relationship with myself, with myself. I had a, I was suffering from some very interesting, but you know, that having a relationship with yourself, I was like, what are they talking about? You know, we don't want you to divorce yourself at the end of the week, but it really is about knowing yourself, because until you can figure out who you are, it is very difficult to build good relationships with other people. It is very difficult to come before God in prayer when you're not really willing to talk about the real issues in your life. You know, they used to say that, you know, God is the eternal healer, you know, the great therapist. Well, you know, if you really don't want to work on your issues, no one wants a great therapist. Some of my family members have accused one another, and they've not been totally wrong that some of them will go, you know, they will shop for a therapist that tells them they're doing everything right and the world's wrong. You know, you can find that therapist if you shop hard enough. You know, if we're not ready to face who we are, we'll find a bad therapist. You know, if we're ready to face who we are, we'll find someone who challenges us, even in relationships. I always think, really, every healthy relationship I've ever seen in a marriage, anything else, they challenge one another. And you know, some of you are like, more than we wish, but it's part of a good relationship, is not that we think alike all the time, you know, that's called buying a mirror. We challenge each other. And so we, you know, Jesus is saying, I want you to store up treasure. I just want you to store up the right treasure. I want you to store, you know, the relationships, how to be with one another, how to treat one another, how to take care of one another. Because I always think, what do people think heaven's gonna be? There's a old sort of, I don't know even what to call it, someone's vision of heaven, one of the sort of a, not really a joke, but the idea that, you know, when they got to heaven, you know, they didn't know whether they were in heaven or hell, because they were seated at a banquet with every wonderful food in the world and all the right people. And, you know, they had just the right amount of hunger and they start to go towards the food and they realize they can't bend their arms. So there's all that food, but they can't get to it. And they're trying to figure out whether they're in heaven or hell. And, you know, there's several tables and several of the tables, it turns out, are in hell because they can't figure out what to do. And several of the tables, they start feeding one another. And they're in heaven. You know, I think we want heaven to be a place where I'll walk in and no matter how miserable I am, they'll make me happy. Okay? That's not heaven. That's not even a good therapist. We have to become the people who really want to be that for Mother Duff, who really want that type of a relationship. And we have to use, if you have certain things, it's not, oh, get rid of everything you have, but use it. And it can be an asset. It can be something financial. It can be wealth. It can be intelligence. It can be power. It can be talent. It can be anything. How do we use it? You know, when there's been this huge political, people even hate the word, which I think is interesting because they love the religious word, but they hate the word privilege. Don't tell me I have privilege. The same people will tell you, I've been so blessed. What's the difference? Well, okay, I get it. Privilege tends to right now carry a lot of ugly baggage with it. But the people who really do work with that word will say, of course you're privileged. Who cares? What do you do with it? Don't be embarrassed if you're blessed. Don't be embarrassed if you're privileged. Don't be embarrassed if you have more. Don't be embarrassed if you have less. What do you do with it? That's the only question Jesus is asking. You know what I mean? Say, you know, this guy is like, so what did you do with all of your wealth? I put them in a building. And then when I overcrowded that building, I got another building. You know, I mean, I'm in that wonderful moment right now where I'm in the brand new factory. And I'm wondering, can I really live this life? I really love this life. I have, and now don't panic, in my house, empty drawers. Oh. You know what I could put in that drawer? Nothing, buy nothing. You don't need anything in that drawer. But it's such a, empty drawers. And you know, when most of us, if we've got empty drawers, we got to get out the Amazon cart. I got an empty drawer. I got room for something, you know. If a guest came tomorrow, they could have a drawer. We can use what we have to bring people in, or, you know, we sort of pack our lives so that no one can get close. And Jesus is like, it's vain because we're working, we're trying to work on ourselves, but we're doing it in all the wrong ways. You know, vanity tends to be when we see one thing over everything else. It's not about, I'm vain because I think I'm better than everyone. When you're vain, it's because there's parts of you that you don't think are as good as everyone else, so you're going to use the parts you think are better if you're just trying to get an even playing field, and you don't even realize you're doing it. If you felt insecure about nothing, you would have no need to feel better about anything. The heaven is where we all realize we're good, and no one needs to be better than anyone else. Being better, and not better than you were yesterday, that's a great thing, you know, and it'll happen. You can be better every day until you're about 60. Passed up, it's just tragic. But, you know, being better, improving, that's one thing, but trying to be better than other people, no, it's great if it's a lacrosse game, but meaning you can't as a Christian, if I'm trying to be a better Christian than other people, I've already lost by that. Just be a good Christian, period. Just be a good person. I have often absolutely hated, and it's not theology in our church, but it's a tendency, sort of a folkloric tendency that's happened over the years, and I know my, I would hear my mother say it once in a while, and I had an aunt who loved to say it, and that was, whenever someone did something good, oh, they'll get a crap, they'll get a jewel and their crown in heaven for that. I thought, heaven's already becoming a competition. I have more jewels than you do, I'm better. We're already trying to be better than one another. You know, rather than be good. I know what's good in this situation, because if we're only trying to be better, then everyone else is setting the bar for us. Rather than, I'm what I'm called to be. If I can know myself, if I can know the scripture, if I can know what God calls me to, I can become good, and that is not a vain pursuit. I need to be better, and I need you to all see how good I am, and I'm better than you. That's vanity. Because if I'm trying to be a better Christian than you, I'm already worse. If I'm trying to be good with all of you, and we're good. I am. I used to always joke that, you know, when people in the church, if you are feeling like you've disappointed God, if you're feeling that you're lost, that is normal. And then my, I have yet told you this, but a friend of mine started reusing that, like he was a comedian. He'd say, when you guys make these mistakes, that is normal. When you make mistakes, that is normal. When I make mistakes, that is special. You know? You know? I mean, it's like, no. We're called to celebrate. You know, people talk about the difference that we're celebrating diversity. We should love one another's gifts that we don't have. But what we really are celebrating at a deeper level is the unity. Because if you have a gift that's different than I have, we can see how they're different and celebrate that. But we also celebrate that we both have gifts. We also celebrate that we both have something to give to the world. We also celebrate that we both have bad days and good days. We also celebrate the unity and look at the diversity. But it's the oneness. There was a, eight, nine years ago, hit the internet. It was all over the place, because the guy kind of got some bad grief, but then eventually everyone loved it. He gave a graduation talk. They were out on the, it was happening out on their football field. It was a nice day. And he gets up and he says, I am here to tell you, none of you are special. You can see the parrots. He said, now, now, let me explain. All of you are special. But if all of us are special, then none of us are special. Someone gave me a wonderful little coaster. I usually don't have those sorts of knickknacks around the house, but someone gave me a little coaster. I have a speech impediment, I'm special. And it said, you are unique in the universe, just like everyone else. I was like, brilliant. Our uniqueness is something we have in common. The two are not, do we celebrate diversity or, they are the same thing. Because we all have it. And so God says, don't chase what makes you different. Explore it, dig into it, that's God's gift. But also chase what keeps you in common. Be as good as God calls you to be. You cannot compete when you're climbing the mountain of God. The mountain of the Lord cannot be climbed over the backs of one another to see who gets there first. It is only when we acknowledge and drag everyone up with us that we are winning the race. And so we ask God today to make us, I used to say that, perfect, perfect is the enemy of the good. You try and be perfect, you'll give up on everything. No, better is also the enemy of good. Not better than you were yesterday, but that desire to be better than others. To be better than others is to say, I'm removing myself. You're really, in theological terms, better than all of you is a step towards excommunication. To take myself out of the communion with others. I want to be one with you, just from above. To truly be one with one another. The incarnation above all is the movement of God in solidarity with humanity. He may have come from above to the whole point. You know, when you're a baby in the crib and Mary is changing your diaper, you're not above. That's what God's willing to do. God's willing to be one of us.
