A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. He said to them, When you pray, say, Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive our sins, as we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us. And do not subject us to the final test. And he said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey, and I have nothing to offer him. And he says in reply from within, Do not bother me. The door has already been locked, and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything. I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. And I tell you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake if he asks for a fish, or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then who are wicked know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Abraham, Abraham. This reading always sounds like one of those Irish jokes that go on for 17 minutes for just too little punchline. It goes on and on and I think, oh, you know, I know we think this is about, you know, the goodness of God and the forgiveness of the people. I think it's actually a parable about the amazing patience of God. I know this because I can see your faces halfway through this story. If I were God, he'd have got to about 40 and I'd have said, cut to the bottom line. What's your bottom line, God? You know, this is a perfect example of how scripture has to travel across so many cultures in so many centuries before it lands here. And it hasn't landed yet. It's not for us. It's for everyone. It's for future generations. But this is Middle Eastern Hegelism. It's, I mean, it's their culture. To kind of, okay, what about this? Okay, what about this? I mean, I don't think we think, oof, real sad for those nine people that they couldn't find 10. You know, I mean, it could go on and on, but it depicts the vision of their relationship with God. As I've mentioned occasionally, one of the most fundamental differences between the spirituality, not the theology, but the spirituality of Judaism and Islam is right there in the words. Islam means that, you know, we define ourselves, Islam is submission. We define ourselves through submission to God. Israel means to argue with God, to wrestle with God. And they believed, I mean, the stories of wrestling with the angel, Jacob's ladder, all these stories because they aren't really, it's not an arrogance of coming up against God. It is their fundamental stance that when they speak of God, they are always speaking of their image of God. And we always have to wrestle with our image of God. You know, when we pray to God, we pray to our image of God. We can't get past that. The actuality of God is just beyond us. And so we have these images, and as we pray to images, we have to wrestle with them. And this is, you know, this sort of spectacular wrestling with the image. My favorite moment in all of these Old Testament stories is when Abraham says, will you sweep away the innocent for the guilty? I mean, suppose there were 50 innocent people. You know, far be it from you to do such a thing. There is a Yiddish word, chutzpah. Do you know the chutzpah it takes to look at God and say, come on, you're better than that. I mean, that's what he's doing. But there's an understanding of the spirituality under this that it's a story about wrestling with our image of God. How often do we come up with a catastrophe, whether it's obvious that it's through the sin of a person or two, like a shooting, whether it's a natural disaster. And we go, why? What is God doing? That's you and I wrestling with our image of God, not with the reality of God because you and I can't get there. But our image, our image is that, you know, if God is God, then life should run along perfectly. Now let me say it out loud, we know that's not right. But certainly it shouldn't get to a certain point. And usually we're saying that when we think we're there. It shouldn't get, they shouldn't be this far. You know, it's this wrestling with God. And the story is not about just about the haggling in the sense of what's the best deal I can get. The haggling in Middle Eastern culture is also about the sustaining of the relationship. You and I, our relationship with a salesperson usually is, I'd like a non-fat latte. Okay. They would find that, this is why we get a reputation in other countries as being rude. It's not that we don't speak the language. So we walk into a store and we don't say hello or good morning. We walk in and say, I'd like, and they're like, for now. That to them is unduly harsh. I really do, I've mentioned this before, but I really do now. I actually, I've mentioned this book. I want to do a book club on it, but there's a book called The Bonjour Effect. Which is, they aren't mad because we don't speak French. They're mad because we walk into their store and don't even say bonjour before we tell them what we want. They're like, no. This, so the haggling of Abraham and God is not, oh, if you just sneak at it, you can get a much better deal on a God. No, it's look at their relationship. Look at the companionship and the friendship and look at the reality of the interaction and that it's not sort of, you know, I go to God for a second in prayer in the morning and I say, here's what I want. Okay, check in tomorrow. We'll see how you're doing. That was real good, but did you miss number four and five on the list yesterday? You know, I mean, it's like, it's this perfunctory. I think, and it's probably getting worse in modern culture as socialization is replaced by networking. You know, networking is creating, you know, in its strictest sense, it's creating relationships that might be helpful to me as opposed to creating relationships. Networking is not a bad thing unless it is the sum total of how we relate to the world. So we, you know, hopefully we never create a relationship that is only about business, is only about what I can get out of it. You know, Abraham and God already have a relationship. That's why the story goes that way. All three of these little sections on prayer are about the constancy of it. He's really not saying with this, you know, if you just keep knocking at night, at midnight, you know, it is not Luke or Jesus saying, look, I've met you people, trust me, you could wear God down and he'll give you whatever you want. All right, you can't wear God down. That's not what prayer is. If I just, how many people I've heard say, I've prayed and I've prayed and I've prayed and they don't want to really end it with the reality statement which is, and God still won't follow my orders. I get done praying and I'm not in charge yet. How come? Because if I pray enough and God will do whatever I want, then think about that. All I have to pray in the name of Jesus, if you're smart, one or two, so get two gathered, pray in the name of Jesus and be consistent enough and God's on the book. So now, Penelope was in charge of the universe. You were God. Because if we really believe that as long as I pray right, God should be doing this stuff, we're in charge. You know, I always want to turn this last part inside out with the second last part where he says, which of you would hand your child a scorpion if they asked for an egg? Well, which of you would hand them a scorpion if they asked for a scorpion? Sometimes we ask for scorpions. You know, it can even be the most gracious prayer. It can just simply be someone who needs healing. And what we don't know is they're on their own journey. I can't ask God to change their journey because I'm not ready for it. Even because they're not ready for it. And they're on their journey. And so we kind of, when we have, if we pray enough, we will wear down our own heart. We'll wear down the walls. We'll wear down whatever it is in us that just can't trust God. We're not wearing down God. It's just, I've tried. A heat is relentless. We can't wear down God. We can wear down the, you know, what this, in 12-step groups they have a thing called, what they call stinking thinking. Meaning the things we tell ourselves that just keep us addicted, the ways we think in life that just have messed us up and they're paradigms of life that aren't helping us and we can't let go. And we fall back into them all the time. You know, all of us do that. We have ways of thinking that we fall back into. And Jesus says, yeah, you just keep a prayer and you will, you'll notice he doesn't say at the end of this, it's, Luke does this each time and he's very clever about it. Matthew doesn't go here but he says, I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitors the loaves because of their friendship, he will give them whatever he needs because of his persistence. He doesn't think he'll give the loaves for his persistence. Ask for the loaves, ask for the loaves and if you're persistent enough, God will give you what you need. Not the loaves. As a matter of fact, I've always kind of thought, what visitor do you have that eats three loaves of bread? It's not me, it is what Yeti came to town. I'm like, it's, but you know, give us this day our daily bread and he follows it with, so he wants three loaves of bread and if you're persistent, what you need. Not what, it doesn't say if you ask, God will give you whatever you asked for. If you're not, God will open the door. You've asked to be opened. He ends it, he says, so if you just ask God for all these good things, God will give you the Holy Spirit. Little, little Peyton switch there at the end. Not, I know God will give me the Holy Spirit. I wanted the winning lottery ticket. I'll worry about the Spirit after I get that ticket. You know, we get the Spirit, we get the relationship with God and it's why it kind of moves us to, I think it's a better practice for us to pursue in life, with our prayer life. I can't tell you that the number of people who over the years have said, you know, it's one of the most common confessions is, I miss my daily prayers. Now, do you know there is nothing in canon law or church teaching that says, this is the amount of prayer you should do daily and if you don't do this, you've sinned. What they're really saying is, I've developed a habit of prayer over the years and I've fallen off my own routine. And, you know, I suppose at some level they're thinking, it's kind of what I committed to God and I didn't keep my commitment. But you made up that commitment of prayer. And so there are people who will say, and I always ask, well, tell me what your daily prayer is. And often, well, I've fallen off my daily prayer. Well, what is your daily prayer? Well, I do 15 rosaries followed by three hours of meditation, followed with that. I missed my morning prayers. Yes, they ran into lunch. You know, and I'm like, if we create that sort of, I'm going to be a prayer warrior, it may not be sustainable. And it may not be as helpful. I think much more helpful is, I think the perfect prayer life would be five or ten minutes in the morning, maybe with a scripture, maybe with a quick reflection that gives you something to think about. And then ten times during the day, bringing it back to your mind for 30 seconds. You know, the old Buddhist monastic tradition was whatever reflection they were given in the morning and they had a five or ten minute meeting with it, then throughout the day in the monastery, the gong would ring every 20 minutes or so. And every time the gong rang, you were just called to stop whatever you were doing, you know, take a breath, remember what it is, and then go right on. That relationship with God, much like this sort of haggling that we see with Abraham, that kind of relationship with God versus the, I dig in and I say every prayer I can and, you know, like the person who says, you know, I just joined a gym and I'm going to go three hours a day. Call me in a week. And you can't walk. You know, and it falls apart. You know, you always have these, I used to have a friend, Kathleen in my last parish was a trainer, and she said, I always try and convince them for the first month that the only goal of the workout is that they still want to work out tomorrow. It's the only goal, so get used to it. Don't kill yourself. Say it with prayer. Can you just get back in touch? I think it would be an amazing thing in Lent is if they give us a little, forget all these complicated prayer apps, one that you could say, just buzz my wrist every 20 minutes so that whatever I was thinking about in the morning I can return to, just for a breath. You know, when children leave for college or to go out in the world, when they finally move, I shouldn't say finally, it sounds so... But when they leave the house in that sort of a final way, the lamenting of the parent is not that the relationship is over. They'll still come and they'll visit. Theoretically, they'll call on a regular basis. You know, the relationship can still be there, but it moves to a relationship where they come and they visit, or we talk and then they're gone again. What the parent misses is running into them in the hallway, seeing them in the kitchen. They're the constant part of your life. That's what we should think with prayer, is that sort of constant touching God, rather than I have my prayer time and then it's back to real life. What we do here, we just think about as often as we can and it doesn't have to be long moments. It is a relationship with God and relationships are... The best relationships we have in our life are built on constancy, not on the duration of each encounter, but on how long we don't allow ourselves to go in between encounters. It's not about can I lengthen my prayer, can I shorten the distance between thinking about God. And so God asks us today to become a people not of deeper prayer, there are times for that, but a people of more constant prayer. I... I was part of a photo thing. They wanted to take pictures of our hands, which is really about the only part of a picture taking. At Porter Hospital, the Helping Hands was their project and they had a picture of all these nurses' hands and then they have a picture of the doctors' hands and so they wanted the chaplains and the three of us, one was kind of an evangelical minister and one was a rabbi, Elliot Baskin, and myself. They said, so would you guys come down and how do you hold your hands in prayer? And I always hate because of course the evangelicals got there before me so I couldn't say the same thing. Oh well, this is kind of our prayer posture and then you know, and Elliot looks at me and goes, well, you know we don't really have a posture for prayer. He says, here in the hospital I am most likely to hold the hands of the person I'm praying with. And then they said, and you Father, what's your most common prayer posture? And I said, my hands are usually at ten and two on the wheel. I realized I realized that sounded like driving was dicey but what I really meant because I remembered Father David Dunman saying you know what, if you would just and it is a habit if you would just, every time you get in the car and every time you get out of the car a quick moment of thinking about God how many times a day would that be? Just connect it. You know. I could move that up a level and say, I'll do it every time I touch the refrigerator door. I could be a monk by Wednesday. I mean, you know what are the things we do normally that we could make touchstones with God? You know, the door of the house could be an important one I'm coming back home I'm leaving home, I do it mindfully God's part of that moment I think we're so into our formulaic prayers that we don't have this constant prayer it's just a moment of thanksgiving I'm leaving the house, I'm coming into the house, I'm about to get nourishment I'm about to travel somewhere constant touchstones with God He's not talking about wearing God down He's talking about being more in constant contact with God and God will wear down the rough edges of our soul and we will start to emanate and radiate to one
