We we study scripture, but We study it. There's a period of time right after scripture was written where all of those Especially the Gospels were taken hostage by Greek culture That the church and whether it's our Greek Church or whether it became the Latin Church nowadays modern churches the American Church we tend to Interpret the Gospels without a clue of what the Semitic literature was of the day These are these are Jewish writings. They are Semitic. They are you you kind of have to understand The way the Jewish people wrote sermons and homilies and stories about Jesus and and the images they would use and Because we don't we lose so much of what's going on Now we sometimes can glean bits and pieces of it from from our own understanding of the gospel But you know when when Jesus is there it says Moses and Elijah are up there with him Most my life I thought well, I wonder why those two got picked So many people and especially when the church puts it with a big story by Abraham Where's Abraham in this story, you know where where are all these other big characters? Moses is the giver of the law He's the one that brings the law down from the mountains Elijah was considered the greatest and the first of the great prophets and if you ever hear in In that day when they're talking about Judaism The whole religion if they want to talk about all of it in one big clump They'll often say as you hear in Deuteronomy as you hear in the stories of Jesus that is the law and the prophets go learn it When they say the law and the prophets they mean that's everything. That's all you need to know is the law and the prophets so When Jesus is there with the law and the prophet What they're saying is that's every image you have of your faith All of these all of these devout Jewish people who are who are following Jesus the law and the prophets You know, there is there's not a rabbi in America that doesn't understand that image No, it's if you ever want to understand the Gospels sit down with a rabbi. It's their literature They understand how that's written So the law and the prophets there he is with all of their imagery off their greatest hits This would be you know, this would be for the average Catholics that you know, he's up there and there is you know the Pope and Mary Okay, you know I mean it's like what are your greatest hits the greatest hits of Judaism were Moses and Elijah and What happens is they want to build three tents? That's another image out of the Old Testament They always wanted to build a tent for the Ark of the Covenant The tent was the way to keep to give God a home with a pilgrim people You can't build God a home The way we think of one if the people he's with are on journey So building the tent the Ark the Ark of the Covenant all those these are ways to keep a kind of temple feeling With a traveling people and remember Jesus is an itinerant creature who's all over the place And so he's they say let's build tents because they're they're probably thinking we had Jesus now We've got Jesus and Elijah and Moses. We are going to take the place by storm Wait till they see who we've picked up You know, it's it's the old it's the old story. There's a there's an old joke of The Pope going out and rolling and he always has a driver and people don't realize this but certain archbishops in certain cartels depending on the Litigiousness of where they live always have drivers because if there's an accident that way they can't sue the Pope And literally there are there are people who are not allowed to drive because the lawsuit has to be against it They just couldn't couldn't do it. So but the Pope Finding just cajoles and promises been blessings and masses. He wants to try and drive the limo And so the Pope gets in and the guy driver takes the other seat. He starts driving him down the street He gets about three blocks before he runs a stop sign Now this is how I know it's a joke because running a stop sign, bro would raise an eye around for an a.m but you know, he he runs the stop sign he gets pulled over immediately and The officer comes over and talks to him for a few minutes and goes back his radio and he says we have a problem We have a huge diplomatic problem. We have pulled over. I Don't even know and they said well, what's the issue? He goes? I don't know who this guy is, but his driver is the Pope See this is bit That's the thing they're thinking. Oh my gosh get his entourage is Elijah and Moses How huge is this let's build tents, let's take them with us And says they just didn't understand this whole moment is for a moment's teaching and the voice comes from heaven And and and and and they close their eyes as the voice comes he says this is my beloved son listen to him and they open up their eyes and the law is gone and The prophets are gone and they're left with Jesus All of the images of their childhood everything that was important to them is gone Listen to this gospel Listen to the words of Jesus. I think how often we still get lost in any faith in the law Or even the prophets it's you know, when we look at the cross and it Paul says this today. He says, you know most of us still Turn our back on the cross and and We we throw that around today to mean something different than it does People say, you know, we have to embrace the cross of Jesus and usually that means whatever set of stories they want you to embrace but what he's talking about is the one central idea of Jesus on the cross, which is Yet don't even even you do good without counting the cost That was the message of the cross You do what is right? Even if you end up on the cross now, it doesn't mean you go around looking for crosses Because there are people You know, I mean it's lit. There are people creating suffering all over the place thinking it's making them holy But if you're creating the suffering So that you can be like Jesus on the cross. You are also like the people who nailed him to the cross You're creating the suffering So, you know what we do instead is we try to find something in life that will help others That will do a good in the world and there will be a cost Not I just made up the cost so I can pay it No, just if you're just needing the pace of the extra use your car loom or to get the gas station Okay, go pay lots of that, sir And we don't just we don't just create suffering to say I'm suffering like Jesus no The glory of Jesus is not that he suffered. It's that he accepted his suffering He could have gotten out of it by not doing the right thing here and there He could have you know He could have put things a certain way and whittled his way around it and probably you know You could tell that he goes up against the Pharisees if he wants to he can out argue on He knows how to get around it he doesn't need to this is what's right I'm gonna say what's right if if this is what they come after me for So no, it's it's the person on the witness stand. No, Jesus does not plead the fifth. I Can't tell the truth because it might incriminate me. Isn't it weird that that's such something like we think that that's a great honor in our system That you're allowed to head up to say let me just tell you The truth doesn't make me look good What a horrible thing to have to say You know, I I am I I can't you know, if I'm going to look good, I really should lie and and that's the church you got back on the cross Jesus is I'm gonna tell the truth and How you receive it? It's not mine to control That's not mine to control in in the law and the prophets there's all sorts of ways around this You know you did good, but you did good for your people Almost all of the prophets prophets are writing to a particular situation that says this has to stop Jesus gospel says no no feeding the poor in your community is not the mandate Starting with the poor in your community, but working for its feeding the poor of the world is the mandate It's the prophets were very Jewish based in the sense that they were telling you how you had to take care of your own people and the gospel becomes this universal this is who you're called to be in the world and You're called to go out and be a good person and there will be cost there's always cost and So you know we're called to go out and do that we're not looking for a law I always love when someone comes into the confessional if they start with Father is this a sin? Before they say another word there's two things I know the first is yes Because no one has come in and said I just gave five thousand dollars to charity it's not the same No one asks is that it's always I just kicked my mother-in-law to the curve, but let me tell you what she did And that's the second thing I know I'm about to get a very short confession and a very long justification You know what they're hoping for is a loophole in the law that says I did something I know I should have done, but maybe it wasn't a sin Maybe it was back. You know here's the line of sin, and I know I got to here But I maybe I got a close and didn't quite make it across and Jesus is how about you walk the other way? How about you just don't don't get that close we all know when we're doing things that We think we can do better And it doesn't mean that it's easy because there are times when we have to try and find a line between Supporting someone and enabling something that's bad It's not that it's easy. It's not cut and dry There are times when we are called to distance ourselves from people because our proximity is not a healthy thing for them there are there are relationships in life that are toxic and And we have to recognize those and go you know I mean when people I've never really had something come to a situation to say This is a horribly abusive situation, but it's good for them Teaching other people to be abusive is not good for them either and so we have this Moment where God says you're gonna have to let go of the law And you're gonna have to let go of the prophets which for them Would be like me say you're gonna have to let go of Mary and the Eucharist I mean it was reaching into their hearts that deeply and Say and you're gonna have to about would do good things of the world No, where Pope Francis has never said that he has said things like we need to get our priests out of the sacristies and into the streets We need to make sure that this is not our entire experience of church in a building We need to be out doing these things and it should have cost You know we we give to one another it always says Without cost you have been blessed without cost what it's really talking about is what without giving cost to others It's always cost to ourselves Jesus paid a cost On the cross and as Paul said today so many people want to turn away from that they don't they don't like that They that's why I love that lie. Your God is your stomach In other words, whatever makes me feel full and say that and whatever makes me feel safe and whatever feeds me is what I chase That's what he means when he says your God is your stomach I even even in spirituality people can be that way I get what feeds me Whenever someone says I went to this church over there for a long long time and Nothing there and there are times you go to churches and it's abusive that's different But nothing that I just don't I didn't get anything out of it. My question is always what did you bring? I don't bring anything. I come to get this is church Okay, you know, but what do we bring what do we bring and what are what are we willing to bring not just in this space but to the world I Think when we let go of the law and the prophets and we're focused on Jesus who? For all of the brilliance of his teachings. It's one of the things I love about this Pope that we have right now For all the brilliance of the teachings what they're remembered for is what they did A friend of mine says that he thinks Francis is the most visual Pope we've ever had There's this picture of him with the with the deformed guy with all the tumors all over his face You know and he he goes out to be with that person. You see him. He has to go out to be with others Although so many pokes there very I always think their first lines they get up on the they get up on the thing and they'll say You know, I am I am a man of God And they'll say, you know, I am Janice I was I am I am John Paul the second or they they get up and they say, you know I'm almost Papa. We have a pope and This guy got up and he says what a Sabbath. Good evening How are you all? It was the funniest opening for a papacy I ever seen You know where we're normal the norm is for the Pope to come out and bless the people He came out and asked them to pray for him It's a different and but it's the things they do What we'll remember are the images of I was just to say that the hardest two jobs in my lifetime in the church Were to be because he was a brilliant theologian But he didn't speak well to people would be to be Pope Benedict's PR person or Pope Francis's security He's off again He's running after those people he you know it but but it's one thing it's what we do that will be remembered I Think our Christianity becomes so much about are you believe in the right thing? Paul says when he says faith without works is dead. You're believing the right thing when you're doing the right thing. You can't divide those our what we truly believe Absolutely dictates all of our actions, so You know if I say that I believe in God, but I'm not doing anything different I must at least believe that it's not terribly urgent. I mean there's a belief. That's running that there's always a belief That's running I if if if I thought that no one would notice and really believe that no one would notice I would probably miss daily mass on Tuesday mornings It's just it's early. It's the first one of the week for me You know why do you get up and go to work every day because I believe Then I get fired otherwise That's why all people go to work at some level they can go to work because they truly believe that if they don't there's consequences so if we truly beliefs and we knack down and so what he's saying is Go don't get belief and an affection for the story confused You can have a great affection for the story of the gospel and not be chasing it not be truly believing in everything that it's telling us to do and to truly believe that Jesus is God and truly believe that Jesus tells us to go out and feed the court visit the sick and free the imprisoned and Do nothing about it our mind our mind will not hold that thiefer Our mind will see the nonce the non sequitur in our own life. It'll see the disjunct nature And so we're told it get away from the law this week Then the laws have all these punny little twists and ferns and you know, I I mentioned last week that over that was joking but you know for some people people come up to me and say Now do Sundays count on Lent? You know what when you start your Lent You make up your own Lent because there's no loop. There's no rules There's two things that Catholic hate Catholic state one is the imposition of rules and then the other is when we don't give them rules Do I receive on the tongue or on the hand your choice choice But which should we really do your choice? Which one's right? We want we want to rule on Nonsense half the time we want to rule and so we so struggle with that People will will will often say, you know, I decided to do this for Lent and this for Lent and this for Lent and then I messed up And it's so they've sinned. Well, they've sinned against their own agreement. They made with themselves You know, they they don't understand that well when someone says I didn't say all my daily prayers In which book are you looking that tells you what prayers you have to say every day? Well, I I made up a set that I say and I didn't say it and forgive yourself You know, we we sometimes make things up and say I'm gonna do this and then what we don't we think that's a sin against God It's nice if you can carry through your discipline, you know, but every time you fall off your diet is not really a sin. I hope That could keep your whole talk But but so we tend to make things up and set odd goals That's the law that he wants us to get rid of now. The Prophet are the stray voices in life you're always gonna have someone else coming to you and say I Just I in prayer God said you should do this anyone who tells you that God gave them a message for you I would be suspect. And so as we as we have this moment of transfiguration Sunday we asked God to look at the images of our life. What are the images we have of God? What are the old images we've got that were great when I was seven? But didn't work for me as a teenager worked for me less by the time I was 30 How do we transfigure our images of God for different times in our life if?
